March 7, 2020: Your Team Losing

OK, I said there’s one thing worse than seeing your team lose in person; that would be if YOUR team loses. By YOUR team, I mean, the team you play on, or in my case, the team that I coach. Let’s talk about our floor hockey playoff game…

I feel like I got out-coached for one. Yeah, maybe the other team played more together… maybe they had some practices unlike us… maybe their coach knows more about hockey than me… I don’t know. Whenever something doesn’t go the way I want it to go, the first thing I think about is, what could I have done better? What could I have done differently? And of course after the fact, I have all sorts of ideas. Lot of good that does us now, coach!

I had a plan going into the game; that was disrupted right out of the gate. The kid I wanted to play goalie in the first period wasn’t there; great, just great. Now I had to scramble a bit… I really didn’t want to play this other kid in goalie; he hasn’t been that great. I had plans to play the other 2 kids in the final 2 periods, so I didn’t want to use them yet. Then the first surprise of the day happened, a good one. A kid who hadn’t played goalie all year volunteered. Awesome! Well, let’s see how “awesome” it is… either he’s saving everything or nothing… haha. He actually did really well. He only gave up 1 goal in the first period and made possibly the best save of the year. I felt really good about that first period. About halfway through, the missing kid shows up; yes! And just before the end of the period, we ended up tying the game. 1-1 after the first period ain’t too bad.

Now, I have our best goalie, who just showed up, ready to put in there in the 2nd period. I kind of loaded up the offense a bit, relying on our best goalie to overcome a slight defensive weakness. He didn’t. He allowed 2 goals, while our offensive heavy set couldn’t score. 3-1 after two periods.

I put my son in goal in the 3rd period, and put the best 3 kids on offense; we needed goals. They didn’t come. My son held the fort down; he didn’t allow one goal, but it didn’t matter. I pulled him with a minute and a half left, putting 4 kids now on the offensive end; still nothing. They scored 2 empty netters, and we lost 5-1. Ouch.

Our best scorer was not on his A game in this one; neither was the kid who showed up late… probably our 3rd best kid. The number 2 player on our team, my son, and the other kids were solid, but without good performances from those other two, we couldn’t get it going. That sucks. After starting 4-1, we’ve now lost 4 straight. A consolation game next week for 3rd place is all that is left. That would get us back to 500 for the year; 3rd place is still good, right? Until then…
