May 10, 2020: What About Baseball?

Way back at the beginning of this whole COVID thing, I thought June 1st was a reasonable return to “normal” date; I guess my “expert” opinion was off… go figure. But here we sit, just about 2 months later, and there is still doubt. The modified plans to begin and complete the season are in discussions, but of course, money will have a big part to do with it.

I miss Wrigley Field, taking my son to a game, playing catch outside. It’s been a part of our summers ever since he was born. I enjoy going to games with my wife, sitting out in the bleachers, having a few. What about the almost annual visit to Sox park with my dad? This really sucks. But, if it means not going to any games this year for the season to start up, so be it. If it means wearing a mask inside the stadium to watch for this year, so be it. I just want them to start playing; oh yeah, and Marquee & Xfinity better figure something out…

I don’t really care about basketball and hockey; the singular reason for that is because the Bulls and the Blackhawks weren’t in the mix for the playoffs, let alone for a title. No love loss there; shut it down, start back up next year. But baseball… man, come on… I miss it.

Not only is the MLB season up in the air, but my son’s season too. I don’t want to make this a personal whine fest, obviously aware of the other horrible effects of this pandemic, but no baseball is right up there on my personal list. I hear talk about doing different divisions by region; maybe there won’t be a full season. Again, I don’t care what it looks like, just get it done; they’re playing in Korea now… and no, I haven’t watched any of it. I thought I would; I did tune in for a quick minute. Once I saw the score 8-0, I immediately turned it off. Now if we have a fantasy baseball draft for the KBO, it may be a different story…

But yes, besides the different true experts’ opinions on where this pandemic is going to lead us, the talks about starting sports back up will undoubtedly come down to money; does that surprise you? Unfortunately, I’m not. I see this in the business that I’m in, a group of essential workers who have been working this entire time. Yes, very happy to be employed during this time, and healthy above all, but for all the push about getting folks to work remotely, what about those folks who have continued down the normal path, against the “flatten the curve” advice because of our “essentialness”… anything extra for us? Nah. Like I said, it could be worse, and it is worse for many folks; I hope that we can trend back to normalcy sooner than later while avoiding another spike for the sake of everyone.

So what about baseball? It sounds like we’ll be hearing something soon. I don’t even want to mention football, whose regular season schedule release is giving us the impression that they will move forward as is. I’d love to believe that, because although baseball is “america’s sport”, if football season was messed up… OK, let’s stay positive…
