May 11, 2014: Reflection Day

On this beautiful Sunday Mother’s Day morning, it’s time for some reflection.  How did that draft go for DA Bears?  Are we going to be able to take care of the Wild?  Will the Cubs lose 100 games again?  Will the Sox be much better?  Will Derrick Rose stay healthy next year?  There’s always plenty to talk about when it comes to sports in our town.  Before digging into those topics, let’s take a second to reflect on our mothers.

My mother was an important part of my die-hard fan development;  she was the original die-hard fan.  And no, not of any of the Chicago teams I just mentioned above (although she does love the Cubs), but of MY teams: every team I ever played on.  My mother attended almost every game I ever played, and for that matter, my brother’s and sister’s too; that’s pretty impressive.  And, as we got older, and developed a love for our teams, she “allowed” it.  Most Sundays growing up, were shopping days, which was especially difficult during the 1985 Bears run.  I still remember watching the entire Cowboys game in Sears with my dad and brother, while my mom and sister hit the mall.  Can you say 44-0?  So from being there for all my sporting activities to allowing us to be “crazy” fans, thanks Mom.  And now, as I see my wife turn into a mother to our son, I’m filled with a proud and appreciative feeling.  I know that mother-son relationship is special, and I look forward to watching that develop between my wife and my son.  And of course, thank you to her for putting up with my die-hard antics, and “allowing” me to take my son down that same path.  He already has fan gear of every team, and each of the teams’ names are in his current vocabulary.  Thank you!

Back to our original questions:  How did that draft go for DA Bears?  Well, I say pretty damn well.  I wanted to draft defense heavy, and we did. I won’t pretend to know every detail about these kids, but to have a CB, DT, DT, and S join our defense, making it younger, and hopefully contributing sooner than later, I couldn’t be happier.  We even went after a potential new backup RB to Forte and maybe a potential back QB to Cutler.  This is the one thing that I am worried about.  An injury to Forte would really hurt us;  an injury to Cutler would just about sink us.  Let’s hope we have something with those 2 picks.  Then to add a punter and OL at the end of the draft is nice too.  We can only hope that we have the next Brad Maynard, the Bears MVP for a couple of those lean seasons.  Only time will tell, but this just adds to my excitement for the future of this team.  When does football start again?

Hawks will win tonight.  Cubs will lose 92 games.  Sox will lose 87 games.  Rose will stay healthy.  The UC will be rocking tonight, and hopefully the Good Hawks show up, and we do what we should do to this team;  beat them mercilessly.  Cubs and Sox both lose another.  As long as the Blackhawks are going, I can balance out my disappointment in each loss the Cubs have;  I’m a glutton for punishment.  The Sox losing helps balance it out too.  Then, there’s always the Bulls to look forward to.  I like the fact that DRose will be playing this summer;  shake off some the that dust Derrick, and come in this year with a championship on your mind, and a healthy body… at least for one more year.

So enjoy the day, enjoy your teams, and most importantly, enjoy the mothers in your life.  They are ALL die-hards too!

    blah, blah, blah, blah, blah…..

If the Hawks don’t change their game plan a bit, and quit shooting the puck directly into the goalie’s chest, good luck tonite, ’cause they’ll need it!
And I have a problem with Rose playing this summer. He sat out the whole season, and now magically he’s good to go,,,,,,but not for the team that’s paying him millions!!! Hope there’s a clause in his contract that if he gets hurt in the offseason, we don’t have to pay him for not playing……….again!
