May 12, 2014: The Good Hawks

posted in: Blackhawks | 5

It took them 2 games in Minnesota, and 1 period last night at the UC, but the Good Hawks finally returned.  It looked like we were still in Minnesota after tallying only 6 shots in the 1st period.  When the Wild scored first, they were supposed to win;  just like every other team in the 2nd round thus far.  Then the 2nd period arrived… The Hawks put 15 shots on goal, and took the momentum back in the game and the series.  It wasn’t a smooth ride the rest of the game, but the guys we know we can count on come playoff time, lead us through.

The first goal was a deflection by none other than Brian Bickell.  The man who plays biggest when the stage is the biggest.  It’s like he was disinterested all year long, and just like the Hawks seemed to say “wake us when the series becomes a series”, I could see him saying “wake me when the playoffs start”.  After that brutal first period, and down 1 goal, it was time for the Hawks to awake, and time for Bickell to be right in the middle of it.  That tied the game, but the game winner still needed to be scored.

Seven playoff wins for the Hawks so far this postseason; four game winning goals by Jonathan Toews.  The Captain came up huge yet again, and deposited a rebound in the back of the net to give the Hawks the lead.  Surprised?  It’s great to see your best players play the best when it really counts.  There are 3 types of “great” players:  a guy that is great in the regular season, and average at best in the playoffs.  A guy that is average during the regular season, and plays great in the playoffs.  Then there is a guy who is great during the season, and even BETTER in the playoffs.  We talked about Bickell who is that 2nd type of player; now we come to Toews who is that 3rd type of player.  I’m sure we already know this, but Toews has IT.  He is that rare breed, the type that is 1st ballot Hall of Fame.  With 4 game winning goals already this postseason, how many will he end up with, and what is the record for that?  I need to find that out, because I think we may see history.

Then the final of my “3 stars” of the game is Corey Crawford.  He made the big saves when we needed them, and there were a few.  After the Wild took their timeout with just over 2 minutes to play, pulled their goalie, and won the faceoff in our zone, Crawford was called on to make his biggest saves.  After the initial shot found it’s way through traffic, Crawford was there.  When the rebound was shot back at him, he was there.  When the second rebound was poked at, he was there.  Whew!  It kind of reminded me of last year, when the Kings drew that play up and tied the game with like 10 seconds to play.  We escaped this time, and grabbed the series lead.

So all is well come this Monday morning, unless I was to talk baseball today; I’ll spare us all this misery.  There’ll be plenty of time to talk baseball, but today, we continue to enjoy the playoff ride that the Hawks are taking us on.  I’d like to say we’re going to end it Tuesday night in Minnesota, but I’m not as sure of that.  I am sure that at the end of this series, there will be one winner, and that winner wears the Indian Head.  Welcome back Hawks.

Count me as one of the many that let out a big sigh of relief when that final horn sounded. It is great to see the Hawks play better, even if it is only a little, but even greater to get that all important W! The Capain came through again! There is a reason he has been wearing that C on his jersey since he was 20 years of age. He is not the best goal scorer or passer, nor is he a flashy guy, but there is not a more balanced player in the nhl. Toews definitely has IT! Everything a team needs in its leader: heart, huscle, leadership, and a big stage performer. 4 game winners and counting! Keep em coming Captain and GO HAWKS! End this series on Tuesday!!!
