May 12, 2020: Back to 98

I’ve seem some people complain about the jumping back and forth from year to year during The Last Dance. First off, quit your bitching. Secondly, that’s the whole purpose of the timeline!!! The timeline is brought up every time we’re about to perform some time travel; it makes it really clear to me & easy to follow. But maybe that’s because I lived it… I know what happened in each and every year. Still, the addition of the timeline to help those who don’t know follow along is a critical piece of the documentary. I’ve actually enjoyed going back to all the previous years more than the actual year the Last Dance took place. But yeah, what about that last year? OK, back to 98 now…

We’ve been lucky enough in Chicago that they’ve been showing every single playoff game from that year. I’ve tried to catch them, but haven’t caught many. Honestly, out of all the Bulls titles, the last playoff run in 1998 was the one I was least zoned in on. Don’t get me wrong; I was still zoned in, but not like the others. Nothing topped 1991, and of course the following 2 years were awesome as well. The hiatus of MJ and his return brought back the can’t miss TV for each and every game of that 72-10 season, including the postseason run where we got that ring and ensured the regular season meant something. 1997 yeah that was tremendous too; we’ll see that in the final 2 episodes. Of course 1998 was great, but I had turned 21 between the 5th & the 6th championships… there were other competing interests. It’s not like I wasn’t drinking way before then, purchasing liquor at this one liquor store illegally (man was he mad when he found out), but we got to hit the bars and the clubs. That wasn’t the main reason I wasn’t zoned in as much in 1998; I was graduating college. As the final playoff run began, I was taking my last finals… and since I was partying most of the time, I had to cram for that, which meant I wasn’t able to zone in as much towards the end; get it?

I remember the Nets series and them being a pain in the ass. But did you know ( I didn’t) that MJ was 30-0 against Sherman Douglas??? That’s just a crazy tidbit, and of course, since he was playing PG for the Nets during this series, we know they got swept. It wasn’t easy though. I really liked Kendall Gill, obviously from the Flying Illini days, my favorite college basketball team of all time. He was a really good player in the NBA as well. I still enjoy watching him today, covering the Bulls every game. Next up was Charlotte. I don’t recall the BJ Armstrong game at all, but that was fun… for him… for that 1 game. As has been well documented during these episodes, MJ didn’t need anything to get zoned in; he found ways to motivate himself. But when you give him something… yeah, your bad. But hey, at least the Hornets didn’t get swept.

Yes, the final 2 episodes will cover the 5th title including possibly my favorite game of all time, the Flu Game, along with the Pacers Eastern Conference Finals series, which was only the 2nd time the Bulls were pushed to 7 games in their 6 championship runs. Of course, the Last Dance will conclude with the Last Shot, and then what the hell will we watch? Well, I already started re-watching The Last Dance… 2 episodes done… haha. Hey, I told you… I can’t get enough of this gold.
