May 13, 2014: Wipeout

So how does a “die-hard” fan watch 342 regular season games per year?  The answer for most of us is, we don’t.  Don’t get me wrong, I would watch 342 regular season games per year, but it’s just not feasible.  Life gets busy.  I’ve already mentioned how family functions “get in the way”, but what about the day-to-day family activities, the work around the house, the late hours at work, or in my case last night, complete exhaustion.  It’s just not possible, no matter how hard we try.

I began the night watching the Cubs game.  When I turned it on, it was 7-2, and I was very pleased.  I saw the Cubs build it up to 9-2, then saw the lead cut to 9-5.  This was the last thing I remember.  The next thing I saw when I flipped back on the TV, was the Sox losing 5-1 in the 9th inning, and I was pleased again.  (Not just because the Sox were losing, but one of my fantasy baseball pitchers, Jesse Chavez, was on the mound for the A’s).  I watched the Cubs score flash across, and saw that they did NOT blow this game;  actually, the complete opposite happened, and they demolished the Cardinals 17-5.  I watched the rest of the 9th inning, and saw the Sox pull within 1 run, before my guy Chavez got the W.  Abreu went deep again in the 9th.  This guy looks like he can flat out hit, however, he was rounding the bases like Kirk Gibson back in the 1988 World Series.  There has got to be a DL stint coming to give the ankles some rest.  Hopefully, this is not a lingering issue for him and the White Sox.  With Sale & Eaton on the DL already, losing Abreu for any length of time would hurt.

So in the past 8 games the Cubs have scored 38 runs.  Wow, that’s great.  Uh, no.  29 of those runs have came in their 2 wins, while the other 9 runs have came in their 6 losses.  That’s ugly.  It would be nice to spread those runs out a little bit, and truly average almost 5 runs per game.  With the early performance of the starting pitching staff (I believe their collective ERA sits at around 2.00 thus far), the Cubs record would look totally different.  Instead, the Cubs sit at 13-24; that’s good for 2nd worst in the MLB.  It will get better… THIS year.

You have to enjoy every win out of these available 342 regular season games (504 games if you enjoy the White Sox wins too).  With Junior Lake having the game of his life and Mike Olt going deep again, it is satisfying… but frustrating.  The inconsistency of a young team is frustrating.  Sitting at .255 for the year, Lake has had some great games, and some horrible ones.  Let’s hope this evens out as well.  As far as Olt, is every hit that he has this year a home run?  Almost.  Out of 17 hits this year, 8 of them have left the yard.  And those 17 hits are good for a batting average of .187.  Yes, it is very frustrating.  The young guys are showing promise, the key now is to do it on a consistent basis.

So with approximately a 2 hour nap mixed in with tonight’s games, I am still about 7-10 days behind in sleep.  You miss games when life gets busy;  you miss sleep when life gets busy.  I think about some of my favorite lines about sleep:  sleep is the cousin of death & you can sleep when you’re dead.  Well, I do know in most cases sleep gets left behind when life gets busy, and that’s OK.  I would choose watching games over sleep every time, but sometimes you just don’t have a choice.
