May 13, 2020: Run It Twice

Is it too soon to start re-watching The Last Dance? Never that. Yep, and I did. I already watched the first 2 episodes. As if I haven’t talked about it enough, here’s some more thoughts. Hey, what the hell else are we going to talk about?

One comment from the first episode really stuck with me. It was a young MJ; he stated that he wanted to bring the Bulls franchise to greatness like the Celtics and the Lakers. I guess you could say he was a prophet too. When it was all said and done, he was the main character in a six championship title dynasty. And yes, only the Celtics and Lakers franchises have more titles than the Bulls do still today. Yes, it’s a lot more, but still… as far as great franchise go,outside of the Celtics and Lakers, the next up is the Bulls; MJ hoped for it and delivered, and all of Chicago is thankful for that. It would be nice if the Bulls could win some more without MJ… that’s another story though.

As with any great thing, there are a lot of people to thank. For Jordan, you have to go all the way to the beginning to thank his parents and his family for helping mold him as a person; you have to thank that one high school coach for cutting him. Another key person in all of this was Dean Smith. Yeah, we know about his coaching; obviously that helped mold MJ. But I’m talking about the discussion that was had between him and Jordan after his junior year. The fact that he told him he should turn pro is something that sticks out to me. A coach being more concerned about the well-being of the player’s future than the program’s future. Keeping Jordan around another year certainly would have benefited UNC bball. But he advised him otherwise; who knows if he would have came out a year later…

And that brings me to another person to thank: Clyde Drexler. Not for the motivation he provided in the 2nd title run, but just the fact that he was a TrailBlazer. As Rod Thorn said, any team would have taken Akeem (since then Hakeem) with the first pick, but that 2nd pick… Sure, the Blazers get roasted for taking Sam Bowie, but they had a 2 guard already… a pretty damn good one. Sure, he’s not Jordan, but nobody is… who really knew he would become the greatest player of all time. Since Clyde was in Portland, they went the big man route; I’m sure Bowie was rated the 2nd best big man coming out that year by all those experts. Hard to blame Portland, but definitely can thank Clyde for being there, helping them make the decision that lead to Jordan being there at 3 for us.

OK. That was it for now. Will be re-watching 3 & 4 next. I’m sure I’ll have some more thoughts. Don’t want to repeat myself; should be OK. There are many levels to this. Heck, it’s giving folks stuff to talk about all week, and for that, we thank you Last Dance. Too bad there are only 2 episodes left…
