May 14, 2020: The Cavs Owner

Yeah, continued re-watching The Last Dance; episode 3 was great because it was the introduction to the Pistons, but that’s not what I want to talk about today. I want to talk about that other team that may have been able to challenge the mighty Pistons: the Cleveland Cavaliers.

This was a really good team. Mark Price was a great point guard. We liked Ron Harper when he was running with the Bulls; imagine him 10 years younger… the dude had skills. Brad Daugherty was a great center; Larry Nance was a very nice player. Plus they had Lenny Wilkens as their coach. Hot Rod Williams, and much maligned Craig Ehlo were part of this team as well. You see all this stuff about players and teams being so much more athletic today; there is some truth to that… “some” truth. The thing is, the teams back then, even if they weren’t as athletic, played like teams; they played basketball, not the junk we have to watch today. They played team ball; they passed the ball… they moved it around. They played defense. They hustled. Now I’m not saying that doesn’t exist at all today, but give me a solid NBA team from the 80s or 90s against the majority of teams today. This Cavs team would fall into that category.

Of course everybody talks about The Shot; who wouldn’t. It was spectacular; I remember it clearly. I remember running up and down the stairs in my house after Jordan hit that game winning shot. It was pure joy. The thing I didn’t remember is that was his 2nd game winning shot… in that game. Yeah, he hit a go ahead jumper with 6 seconds left to give the Bulls the lead; sure, not as dramatic as what followed, but hell… it was a game winning shot… until the Cavs drew up a beauty that lead to an Ehlo layup and the lead; thankfully they left 3 seconds on the clock. That ended up being just enough time for an all time memory to be made. This wasn’t the only memory against the Cavs. After all, when you talk about MJ, you’re talking about the Cavs owner.

He hit another shot to eliminate this team in the playoffs, a fade away over the Jordan stopper Gerald Wilkins. He scored his regular season high in points with 69 against this same team. Cleveland had to hate Jordan, and rightfully so. We had many good battles with that team during those years. Like I said, they were a very good team, and if it weren’t for MJ and the Bulls, maybe they would have got a shot on the big stage; you can say that for a lot of teams and players during that era.

I’m going to try to re-watch all 8 episodes before watching the final 2 episodes on Monday morning. After the next blog, I’ll be halfway there. Inject this stuff in my veins…
