May 17, 2014: So close, yet so far

After 40 games, the Cubs sit with a 13-27 mark.  That’s good for worst in the majors.  Are they really this bad?  I’d like to think not.  I’d like to think they go on a run at some point and start winning some games.  I don’t want another 100 loss season.  This is NOT part of the rebuilding plan.  There is no way this team should be this bad.  I haven’t watched every game, but it seems like they have been IN almost every game…  Well, actually exactly half of the games were decided by 2 runs or less.  Let’s take a closer look at that.

With the 1-run loss today, the Cubs record for 1-run games stands at 2-11.  Their record for 2-run games is 1-6.  After some simple math, that’s 3-17 in close games; those decided by 2 or less runs.  In the rest of the games, the Cubs sit at 10-10.  What does it all mean?  I’m not exactly sure, but somehow those close games have to even out a little bit, right?  At this pace, the Cubs will finish with a record of approximately 53-109.  Whew… that hurts to look at.  Their record in “close” games would approximately be 12-68.  That’s just flat out impossible, right?

The worst record ever in Major League Baseball came in 1899 by the Cleveland Spiders: 20-134, winning percentage of .130.  Since 1900, the worst record in the majors was turned in by the Philadelphia Athletics who finished 36-117 with a winning percentage of .235 in 1916.  The Cubs worst record ever was achieved twice in 1962 & 1966.  In both of these years, they finished with a 59-103 record, which was a .364 winning percentage.  Their current winning percentage this year is .325.  I know we’re supposed to be celebrating Wrigley’s 100th anniversary, I just didn’t know we were going to “celebrate” like this.  It has to get better, right?

It’s like I’m trying to talk myself off the ledge; trying to convince myself this team will get better.  It just can’t get any worse.  By this year, the 3rd year of the Theo plan, we were supposed to be better than this.  We took the 101 loss season like a punch in the mouth the 1st year, and I was OK with that.  We improved by 5 games last year to finish with 96 losses: baby steps.  This year I predicted 70 wins, which would equal 92 losses: another baby step forward.  By next year, I was hoping “to run” for a .500 record.  Wishful thinking?  At this point, I’d have to say yes.  To take another 100 loss season would be devastating.

We have to at the very least finish with a better record than last year to show some sort of progress, as little as it may be.  I know we’re supposed to keep our focus on the “long-term”, but making sure we don’t continue to fail in the short term, has got to be priority.  Bring in the young guns!  Give this current team a boost.  Again, I don’t think this team is THAT bad, but obviously they need something to happen to turn this ship around.  Sign Samardzija!  Make a commitment to the future in one of our guys that we have today, like with Starlin and Rizzo.  I’m sure they want to stick to “the plan” as much as possible, but there’s got to be an audible called here.  Theo did only sign a 5 year contract I believe…

On the other side of town, the Sox inched closer to .500 with a win.  They’ll be around this mark most of the year, most of the time inching towards it versus going above it.  Regardless of that, I’d trade that in a second for MY team.  For the Cubs to be inching towards .500 would be tremendous.  It would show a light at the end of the tunnel.  It would give us some evidence that the plan may be coming together.

I still believe, that’s what Cubs fans do.  I’m sure there are a lot of Cubs fans frustrated, and I’m sure there are some Cubs “fans” who are done with them… finally.  Those “fans” have stopped believing after all these years.  I’m not one of them.  Sure, I’m frustrated, but isn’t that part of the Cubs fan definition?  That needs to change.  It needs to change NOW.  The focus needs to be on winning games now.  Here’s hoping the next 40 are better than the first… it’s got to be, right?
