May 25, 2014: Believing the Hype?

Man do I miss the #1 announcing team.  Is it just me, or are these guys heavily on LA’s jock?  Maybe it’s because we don’t have one of our own in the booth, but it just seems they keep talking this Kings team up.  I’m about to mute the sound of the TV and listen to the radio, except with the DirecTV delay, that wouldn’t be pretty.  Well, the Kings lived up to all that hype in Game 3, as they took out our beloved Hawks 4-3.  Now down 2-1 in the series, the Hawks look to dig deep, and play their best in what is now a critical Game 4 in LA on Monday night.

I was pretty happy after the 1st period.  The Hawks looked on top of their game, and with the Captain netting the first 2 goals to give us a 2-1 lead after the first, I was ready to see the Hawks dominate.  The 2nd period was well played for the most part, yet we found ourselves down 3-2.  The 3rd period turned out to be a train wreck, as we were outshot 18-7.  I really thought the Hawks were going to pull it out in the 3rd period.  I’m not sure who to blame for this loss… do I dare credit the Kings for their play?

I’d have to say yes.  They’re definitely NOT the Minnesota Wild, but we knew that.  Are they as good as the St. Louis Blues?  Well, their postseason resume definitely blows them away, although I would still sit here today and say that I think the Blues will be our biggest challenge this postseason.  I guess I don’t believe the hype.  Maybe I will be proven wrong.  The Kings responded to the Hawks strong play, and at the end of the night, turned the tables on us, on their home ice.  This is what good teams are supposed to do… win at home.  The fact still remains that the Hawks need to get one in LA.

If that’s going to happen, I’m thinking our power play has to be better… a lot better.  That’s one thing I never understood about our Hawks… how they go through periods where they really struggle with the man advantage.  With all the skill and experience on this team, you would think our power play would be feared.  It fell flat again tonight.  Going 0-4, I think there was only really one of the power plays where I thought we actually gained some momentum.  The first key to winning Game 4 has to be the power play.

What about our big guns?  Toews was huge, and although I thought Hossa and Sharp both played well, neither tallied a goal until 3 seconds left in the game when Sharp deflected one in.  Kane had a couple good chances, but came up empty.  Bickell has returned to regular season form it appears.  I didn’t think Crawford played bad, but he could have been better.  Can’t blame him for the Carter goal, and we’ll let the power play goal slide, but he definitely should have made a save on one of those other goals.  He let one slip under his pad, and another one whiz right by him, although maybe Oduya was in the way?  Either way, we need the rest of the core to play big from here on out.  Second key is the play of the core.

Will that be enough to get it done?  I’d like to think so.  I still think we will win this series, although I am a little nervous after we were outplayed in this one.  Have we seen the best hockey from this Blackhawk team yet?  If they could duplicate that 1st period, I like our chances.  I still think the best is to come… it has to.

So congrats Kings on a nice victory.  Now, we can listen to these announcers drool over you some more.  Hear them talk about your resolve, your tight-knit team chemistry, and how you’ve played the most playoffs games of any team the last 3 years.  I’m still not buying it.  So pour it on boys, because the Hawks play best when they are challenged.  The victory in Game 2 could have been looked at as a fluke, this one cannot.  Game on.  Do we have to wait until Monday night to play Game 4?
