May 30, 2014: Represent

Being a Chicago sports fan is great. Living in Chicago among the rest of the brethren that lives and breathes it, being able to share these passionate feelings, it doesn’t get any better.  It doesn’t stop there though. Chicago sports teams are nationwide, heck even worldwide.  Throwing that Bears shirt on gets recognition wherever you go.

I showed up to Vegas today with my Blackhawks hat on… Representing. There were some fellow Indian head supporters, including my father-in-law, who shared their distress and joy about game 5, and are anxiously waiting for tonight’s game 6.  With the rest of California showing up this weekend, I’m sure I’ll be out numbered.  That won’t stop me from wearing my favorite Blackhawks t-shirt tomorrow all day. It’s kind of hot, like 100 degrees hot, for the jersey.  Seeing the hawks as slight underdogs even may get me to invest some of my hard earned dough on them. After all, you got to have faith.  I’m sure the rest of the hawks fans will be out and about tomorrow ready to cheer them on. Go Hawks!

Later in the day, I switched it up to the Bears shirt. That alone got plenty of attention. I had a conversation about the draft, and how someone really liked the first round pick. Next was the disbelief in the Vegas over/under win total on the year of 8. 8 wins?!?!  You’ve got to be kidding me. I know there’s no such thing as easy money, but damn, it’s pretty depressing thinking about the bears only winning 8 games this year.  I predicted 11-5. Even if that is a little generous, I’m going to stay bare minimum 9…. Unless Jay goes down. Ugh!

After that there was about 10 “go bears” or “da bears”. It’s great seeing mutual fans of the same team outside of Chicago.  Even if there not from Chicago, like Frankfurt, it’s still nice to see the love.  I know everyone is not invested in my teams the way I am, even in Chicago. I still say the more the merrier.

Living in LA for about 4 years, I was always wearing my Chicago gear. Plenty of Chicago fans in LA as people flock west to ditch the cold weather.  There was even a bears bar out in Burbank. That was cool. It was a dive bar that was packed wall to wall with bear fans. From talking to everyone in there, about 75% were Chicago transplants, talking about the city and their old neighborhood and of course da Bears. They won that day vs Detroit, as they do most games against Detroit, as do most teams against Detroit.  With my brother out there with me, that day was a blast.

Even across the pond, Chicago gets love. It may not be the sports kind, like people knowing Chicago for al Capone or Jerry springer, but they know Chicago. On a ferry back to Athens, a bunch of Greek cooking students and their professors, knew of Chicago. Michael Jordan and the Bulls was what he talked about. I guess if anyone was worldwide, and could take Chicago with him, it would be MJ. He definitely represented us well. The honeymoon with the wife include a handful of Chicago moments.

I even see people with cubs and sox gear walking around the desert out here. Although the cubs are definitely loved nationwide, the sox get some too. Either way you go, out here, it’s still Chicago. I put that cubs sox stuff on the back burner as I nod what’s up to the sox fans.

But tonight, it’s all about the hawks. They need to win to keep that championship drive alive. As one guy told me, it’s great to have a winner in Chicago. The Blackhawks are carrying that flag right now. Don’t let us down boys. Represent tonight!

Vegas! Fucker….I’d bet over on Bears wins. 8 is right where it should be. Like them or not, Pack are really good, and Detroit and Minny aren’t garbage, but can go either way. We signed guys got our awful D, but let’s prove it’s also not an awful scheme….
