May 30, 2020: Running the Point

Back to building my all-time NBA team… still a few more days to catch up on. We have Michael Jordan at shooting guard and Hakeem Olajuwon at center. The next position we’re going to look at is the point guard.

While at shooting guard there was only one, and at center we looked at 5 different guys, the point guard position is going to come down to 2. When you’re talking about the greatest point guard of all time, you’re talking Magic vs The Big O, period. I thought this one was going to be easy; it’s only 2 guys to choose from. I saw Magic play a whole lot; I never saw Oscar play. Yet, for some reason, I can’t pull the trigger and just make Magic the slam dunk selection. Let’s take a closer look.

Here are the main stats on these two. Points— Robertson 25.7, Magic 19.5. Rebounds– Robertson 7.5, Magic 7.2. Assists– Robertson 9.5, Magic 11.2. Games— Robertson 1040, Magic 906. I think the edge goes to Oscar here. It’s tough to compare the two defensively for never having seen Robertson play, but Oscar had to be better than Magic on that side of the ball, right? There were no defensive stats back then; there were with Magic, and he was never in the conversation. Yet when it comes to rings… Magic is the man; 5x champion! Oscar did get his 1 though… They were both rookie of the years. They were both 12x all stars. Oscar was 11x all NBA; Magic was 10x. Bottom line… both these guys were really, really good. In fact, since there’s only 2 in the conversation for best ever, and we need a backup point guard, both of them will be on this roster when it’s all said and done. Now who will start?

We already saw the Magic MJ back court on the Dream Team back in 1992; they did OK… haha. But can you imagine the starting guard combo of Big O and MJ??? I can. In fact, I like that idea so much, I’m going with Oscar Robertson as my all-time NBA starting point guard. It wasn’t an easy decision, and no, I’m not biased against the Lakers; there will be some representation on this team’s roster when it’s all said and done. I just love the thought of Oscar Robertson running the point next to MJ, and feeding Hakeem in the post.

I’m pretty happy with my all-time NBA team thus far. With a starting back court of Michael Jordan and Oscar Robertson, and with Hakeem Olajuwon the man in the middle, we already have enough to win multiple titles. But this isn’t about multiple titles… it’s about building a team that will never lose a game to anyone… ever. It’s about building a team where we can run out TWO starting lineups that will never lose a game to anyone… ever. It’s about having that all-time depth, where players 11-15 would be a dynasty. We’re just getting started. Moving onto the forwards next.
