May 6, 2020: Been There Done That

Welcome to Episode 6 of The Last Dance. I’ve seen people complain about how it jumps around a lot, and it confuses them. For those people… that’s why they show the timeline when they’re doing it. If you can’t follow along, maybe you shouldn’t be watching… or maybe you just need something to complain about. Whatever… this timeline jump took us from 1998 back to 1993.

The Bulls, now grizzled veterans, headed into the playoffs again. This time they would run into a new, but familiar challenge, with the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals. I remember this series clearly. It was huge, and after going down 2-0, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t worried. Actually, I think the fact that we went down in this series, made us spoiled fans pay attention a little closer; it brought us to the edge of our seats. Maybe we weren’t going to easily punch our ticket to the Finals this year…

The Knicks were a great team, only problem was we had been there done that. We’ve seen this movie before… a team trying to rough us up, get under our skin, throw us off our game. This is the point where I say “Thank You Pistons” again. The Bulls were all too familiar with how to overcome this type of challenge; having MJ didn’t hurt either. Storming back to tie the series after winning two at the Stadium, it was back to the Big Apple for a pivotal Game 5. The anticipation heading into that game was HUGE. It would go down as one of my favorite Bulls games of all time. The end of the game that was featured… whew; that was close. But at the end of the day, and series, the Bulls would get it done. The three-peat mission was still alive.

Poor Charles Barkley; I really like him. As if being in the Finals wasn’t motivation enough, having Sir Charles win the regular season MVP only fueled MJ; dare I say one of the greatest Finals performances of all time? Everyone remembers the final shot; I sure do. I jumped up and started banging on the door inside my parent’s house. Unforgettable… a much better time for Mr. Paxson. Of course it was Jordan who got us to this point, practically carrying us through the entire series, and that last 4th quarter, scoring every point but that last basket. The three peat was complete.

MJ’s “competition problem” was talked about in this one too. We had heard all those stories before; the guy liked to gamble and had the money to do so. As long as it didn’t effect his play, who cares, right? Who doesn’t like to gamble? Haha… yeah, I have that “competition problem” too. As they discussed, it was a crack in the armor for some, and they tried to use it to knock him off his perch; New York media was in full court press, hoping to help the Knicks with this distraction. Nah… didn’t happen. MJ rose up, backed up by the rest of the Bulls, to claim what was rightfully ours this decade; another NBA title.

Curious to see the next 2 episodes, and how the death of his father, the first retirement, and his baseball career are covered. Those were the “dark days”, although the Bulls still played their asses off even without MJ. As Bulls fans, we didn’t really know what the dark days were; we’d find out after this last dance concludes. Until then though, there’s still a ton to cover… the 4th, 5th, and of course, final title. Give me more, more, more!!!
