OK, I know I’m not the only one who remembers this album… Souls of Mischief… 17 years old at the time, I was certainly starting to get in all sorts of mischief back in 1993. The year in baseball, our next year up in the Baseball Seasons review, was a pretty good one too, especially if you like good endings. Actually, there is not a better way for a season to end, just like we all played out in our heads, in our backyards; dreams became reality.

Can’t really say the same for the Cubs that year. Before the season began, the Cubs made one of the worst decisions in franchise history. They decided to NOT offer free agent pitcher Greg Maddux a new contract. Yes, the Braves swooped in and signed him, and the rest is history. He did end up back in a Cubs uniform at the end of his career, which was kind of cool, but most of his dominant years were spent leading the Braves starting rotation, winning division title after division title, and finally winning one World Series. But it wouldn’t be the Braves year this year. Actually, they DID win the division in this final year before the Wild Card teams began; one year too late for the Giants, who like the Braves won over 100 games that year, but finished a game behind Atlanta which caused them to miss the playoffs. The Giants had their shiny new player that year too: Barry Bonds. No, when it came to the National League rep in the Series, it was none other than the Philadelphia Phillies.

Out in the American League, the other Chicago team, would punch their ticket to the playoffs. Unfortunately for them, they would face off with the defending World Series champions, the Toronto Blue Jays. Anybody from Chicago knows what happened in Game 1 of the ALCS in Chicago that year. His Airness was in the house, and the rumor of his retiring from basketball flew around the stadium that night; say it ain’t so… please. Coming off 3 straight rings… at the absolute peak of his game… no fricking way; yes, it did happen. Maybe that destroyed the Sox mojo, or maybe the Blue Jays were just too damn good. Talk about loaded. Alomar, Olerud, Molitor, Carter, Henderson, Fernandez… wow!

After the Twins won in 7 games against the Braves in 1991, the Blue Jays took down the Braves in 6 games in 1992. This time it would be the Phillies, who upset the juggernaut Braves in the NLCS, trying to do the same to the Blue Jays in the Fall Classic. It wasn’t meant to be; the mojo dried up, and the Blue Jays became the first team to repeat since the Yankees in 1977 and 1978. But back to that ending… poor Mitch Williams… Wild Thing… we knew all about that roller coaster with him closing for the Cubs for a while before getting to Philly. He always made it interesting. Then there was the other ex-Cub Joe Carter, only 51 ABs back in 1983 as a rookie, who faced off with Wild Thing trying to be that guy… that guy who walks off and hits the World Series winning home run. He did; it doesn’t get much better than that.

OK, good bye 1993; many good memories back around that time. Seems like another lifetime ago… But that Joe Carter home run to win the Series in 6… that was once in a lifetime. Well, actually twice in a lifetime, as Bill Mazeroski did the same in 1960 when the Pirates beat the Yankees, this time in Game 7. Will we ever see a World Series end with a walk off homer again? I sure hope so… can you imagine your team doing that? Never stop dreaming…
