May 9, 2020: Unopened Packs

I talked about how I got on a brief kick of buying old baseball cards; well, it’s over now. The damage was about $100. The first purchase, I just talked about; that was the 9 packs of 1989-1990 NBA Hoops cards. This one was probably my best purchase. I think my son enjoyed this one the most, plus, the way the packs were, there was no possibility of tampering, or at least that’s what I think. Here are my other scores.

A 1982 Topps NFL football unopened wax pack was next. The sweet spot I was looking for was early 80s. My first serious year of collecting was 1985; I wanted to focus on the years before that. Since I don’t have my fantasy baseball team to manage on a daily basis, I needed some “veg-out” time filled. I looked at the various years and the various sports; I looked at the rookie cards or cards I would be interested in getting. Of course price came into play; there are some old packs that are just way too much money. The 1982 pack was mostly a bust, although I did get a Tony Dorsett “In Action” card.

Next up was 1984 Topps Baseball cards; I ended up getting 2 unopened rack packs. These were the ones that hung in your local walgreens or woolworths, where you could see the front 3 and back 3 cards. They were in clear plastic wrap; you know what I’m talking about right? Anyways, again, no way to tamper with these I don’t think. I got some pretty cool cards in those packs. Not the Mattingly or Strawberry I was hoping for, but I did score Nolan Ryan, Ryne Sandberg, Bill Buckner, Jim Frey; I’m trying to think of the others… For a brief moment, I thought maybe I should try to collect the entire 1984 set, which would then extend my collection of Topps baseball cards from 1984-1990; that may get too expensive. I mean, I could score 90% of that year for cheap, but the other 10% is what would get me.

A 1981-1982 Topps basketball wax pack & a 1982 Topps baseball wax pack were next. This is where I soured on the old “unopened” wax packs. The baseball one was fine, I guess… didn’t get anybody, but the basketball one.. I was short one card. Guy said it was a manufacturer error. I’ve bought a lot of packs over my years and I have never been short a card. Sure I understand it could happen, but really? Then I’m seeing old wax packs, just the wrappers, being sold on eBay. So people buy these, put there old cards in there, nobody good of course, then “reseal” it and sell it for bucks on eBay; that is a very good possibility and virtually impossible to prove. These were the last 2 wax packs I bought.

My final purchase was a 1985 Topps baseball rack pack. I know, I know… I said I wanted to focus on the years before then, but I couldn’t resist. This one brought me back, and lo and behold, a Dwight Gooden rookie! I was pumped; I had seen this card going for $175… but then I realized this was like 20 years ago; it’s worth like $5 now I think… oh well.

It wasn’t to flip any good cards I got, although that would have been fine too. It was more about the enjoyment, the nostalgia, the fun that I had doing it. So there, I scratched that itch… although I am still keeping an eye on it; maybe something else will hit the radar? Maybe not… maybe before anything, I need to scoop all my old stuff from my parents’ house. OK moving on…
