November 11, 2020: Second Helping

Mack Attack is my team name in my 2nd fantasy league. This league is actually a new one. It’s a keeper league that is in year 2. If I thought auction was that much better than snake, then playing in a keeper league is that much better than just your normal one. Thinking about building a team, trading draft picks, trading keepers… this is good stuff. For any of us who loved to play franchise mode in Madden back in the day, or heck today for that matter, this is what it’s all about.

Last year wasn’t particularly memorable for my team in this league, but I did keep what turned out to be a pretty good WR. Terry McLaurin, who I picked up off the waiver wire last year, turned out to be my first keeper; it cost me a 16th round draft pick. That’s how you start to build a team. Now my other keeper who cost me a 12th round pick was Devin Singletary. I’m not sure what the hell the Bills are doing on offense with their RBs, and maybe Singletary just isn’t that good, always hearing about the other Bills RBs, but it’s been a disappointing year for him. I was trying to unload him before the trade deadline snuck up on me; rookie mistake from this grizzled veteran. Still a 12th round pick is not going to sink me over the next couple years…

I did make a really good keeper league trade earlier in the year which netted me a WR that I will have on the roster for the next 2 years, and only will cost me a 14th round pick: DK Metcalf. Now I have 2 WRs that will cost me two late round picks that can be the leaders at that position. Feeling pretty good about my wide outs going forward, yet with the swing and a miss at the RB keeper, I will need to address this position, which will most likely have to be through the draft next year, unless I keep Myles Gaskin from the Dolphins. I’ve actually been set on keeping Justin Herbert who will cost me a 15th round pick; I was originally thinking about keeping Patrick Mahomes, but he’d cost me a 1st round pick. Worth it? Maybe, maybe not. I still have time to decide that.

Back to this year, and I’m not out of it yet. At 4-5, in 7th place, I’m actually in a cluster of 10 teams that are separated by only 2 games. Big game this week; there will be big games every week, thus I’m carrying my brand new rostering multiple defenses strategy into this league as well. Having to choose between Mahomes and Herbert at QB may have scared me in the past… worried about starting the wrong guy. But in this keeper league, that anxiety has all but gone away. Trust my decision; if it doesn’t work out, then a loss helps my draft position. It’s a no lose situation, at least that’s how I rationalize it in this “small money” league; that will change next year, and rightfully so. If you’re in a long term league with keepers, you definitely want to raise the entry fee.

The only bad thing about playing in two leagues is when your guys in one league are on your opponent’s team in the other. This is the predicament I’m in this week. Hoping to come away with the perfect balance and snag both matchups again. Until then, it’s back to reality. Thanks for indulging my fantasy talk for a minute, including this second helping; it is almost Thanksgiving… good luck!
