November 12, 2020: And the Winner Is

In case you didn’t know, and maybe you didn’t because the MLB is so great at marketing this stuff, award season is here. And the winner is…

Jose Abreu grabbed the AL MVP award. This was some much needed good news for the White Sox. He deserved it. If anybody knows this, it is this Cubs fan. I’d love to forget that series at Wrigley this year when Abreu hit more home runs at Wrigley than most Cubs the entire year. Yeah, I joke about giving him a piss test, and may have talked some crap about his little beard pony tail, but the dude was legit this year. For a guy some wanted gone, not too shabby. He is a perfect fit for this young team, a real class guy. Will he be able to repeat this performance heading into an all important 2021 season for the Sox?

The Sox weren’t done. Luis Robert won a gold glove and finished 2nd in rookie of the year voting. Dude is a stud, can’t really deny that. Of course how he will adjust, after the league adjusts to him like they did in the last few weeks of this season, will go a long way to how good this kid really can be. And then yeah, their ex-manager almost won manager of the year. It was an impressive award season for the Sox, but hey, the Cubs weren’t completely shut out.

Did you know this year was the first time MLB has ever awarded “the defensive team of the year” award, or whatever they called it. Yeah, that was the Cubs; bam! The Cubs did play well defensively, unlike the last couple years. They tightened up on the defensive side of things, unfortunately it was the offense that was the downfall for this team. Kind of reminds me of another Chicago team… Anyways, Rizzo and Baez scooped up some gold gloves; both are deserving. Yu Darvish who pitched awesome this year, came up short, finishing 2nd to psycho boy Trevor Bauer. He can pitch though… really well; where will he end up next year? Yu will be back on the mound for the Cubs, leading an uncertain starting rotation with Hendricks. Really glad to see Yu dealing after his rough start with us.

Freddie Freeman won NL MVP; that was well deserved too. On my fantasy baseball team every year, except of course this year, he is one of the most consistent performers year in year out. The managers of the year were Mattingly with the Marlins (screw the Marlins) and Cash from the Rays. Mattingly helped manage a team of nobodys through COVID and through the Cubs in the first round of the wacky playoffs; whatever… Cash meanwhile will be best known for the move he made in the deciding Game 6 of this year’s Series. Really tough to defend that move in my opinion. I know… analytics, analytics, and do what got you there, but man… that’s tough.

Congrats to all the winners. The only award that really matters is the one that the Dodgers won. Maybe it will be LaRussa holding up the 2021 World Series trophy about a year from now? You just never know…
