November 18, 2023: Weekend Without Bets

Thanks to the state of Florida, who will allow you to tote shotguns and rifles driving around in your pickup truck with a confederate flag flying out the back window, I had to endure a weekend without bets while on our trip down south. Yes, that’s right: no Draft Kings betting allowed. How crazy is that? The only thing that can be keeping these other states from legalizing this is figuring out how to chop up the money that will come pouring in. I’m sorry, that’s it. My buddy who lives in California tells me about the ads they run out there, talking about how addicting gambling is. I’m not saying it’s not true, but… let’s open a legal weed spot every other block, that’s cool. Let’s have a liquor store around every corner; no addiction there. In a state as big as California… can you imagine the money that will be flowing in? In the state of New York, it’s around $2B in dollars wagered per month. That’s right… it’s not a typo. Let me spell it out for you: 2 BILLION DOLLARS! PER MONTH!!! Maybe Vegas would take more of a hit if gambling was legalized in Cali than any other state; that’s the only other angle that makes sense, considering the pilgrimage that takes place every weekend. Anyways…

So how do I get around this roadblock to my daily betting? Well, put in my bets early of course. As we boarded the plane on Friday afternoon in Chicago, I said a tearful goodbye to my Draft Kings app… haha. Ok, not to that extent, but it was weird not being able to fire. Like I said, it was good to have a little break. For any job, you need a break every now and then, so even though I loaded my bets early, I wasn’t studying any games; that was refreshing… sort of. Because we did get to watch a little bit of the college games on Saturday, I couldn’t do any live betting… maybe it saved me some money? Maybe I shouldn’t have locked my bets early. We were tuned into the beginning of the Georgia Tennessee game; I was all over the Vols. Welp… maybe that long TD run on the first offensive play from scrimmage for Tennessee was a bad thing… It certainly woke up the Georgia defense, who only allowed a FG the rest of the way. That game turned out to be my worst loss on Saturday. The other games didn’t go so well either…

Maybe I really should have took a break, and NOT loaded my bets in early. Lesson to be learned? Well, if not loading bets early is a lesson, not sure I’m going to learn that one. Truth is, if I’m ever in this situation again, I will do the same exact thing. Until the rest of these states figure out how to split all the money that will come pouring into their state, I may have to navigate this situation. Although, until we head back to California or Florida at some point, can’t say we have any plans to go to Alabama, Alaska, Georgia, Idaho, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah, Vermont, or Wisconsin… whew!
