November 21, 2020: Cheer Me Up

posted in: Bears | 0

5:57 AM and my son was waking me up; it must be the weekend. I was hoping to sleep in a bit more after a late night with some wine and an impressive rotation of movies with Wolf of Wall Street, Tombstone, Slumdog Millionaire, Half Baked, and Traffic. I trudged downstairs as my son took full advantage of the weekend where he is allowed to play video games. What could I watch?

Turned on NFL Network; I love that station. The only problem is that the Bears aren’t playing this week; secondly, anything that could be talked about for the Bears this year would be depressing. I needed something to cheer me up. Let’s watch some old Bears highlights.

First up was the original Flu Game by Walter Payton back in 1975 vs the Vikings where he set the single game record for rushing yards with 275. It was the anniversary of that game this week. I had already seen some stuff, so started off watching a few more minutes of that. The next place we went, prompted by a recommended YouTube video was 2005. I wanted to see the back to back picks by Mike Brown; I was off with my years. Instead, I pulled up the Bears Niners game from 2005. One of my favorites, maybe because we were at Bally’s in Vegas watching this one, winning money at the same time, as Nathan Vasher returned a missed field goal kick 100+ yards. The wind that game was insane. From there I did find those Mike Brown picks, all the way back in 2001. 2001 was a pretty big year for me, since I met my future wife that year. It was a big year for the Bears too; Mike Brown was one of my favorites. The comeback and win against the Niners as Terrell Owens alligator armed the pass in OT which Mike Brown snatched and took to the house for the win. Then, the following week to comeback in even crazier fashion… TD under a minute left, onside kick recovery, tipped Hail Mary TD to send the game to OT, and then of course the tipped ball ran back by Mike Brown. You gotta keep the faith!!!

My son then said “Dad, can we see the Cardinals game?” Well, of course we can; I love this kid. Yes, THAT Cardinals game from 2006 on MNF in the desert. Yes, that same game that I attended in person. I can watch those highlights on repeat forever; talk about cheering up. Being there for it, reliving it though the TV, unbelievable that we were able to do that with the offense turning the ball over 5, 6 times and not scoring 1 TD; sound familiar? After that we went to the Traylor INT return against the Jags. Big man rumbling down the sideline, looking to give the ball to somebody, then just deciding to hug it in his stomach as he slowed to a jog. It was awesome! Speaking of big men, the next place we went was to the Fridge. The birth of the Fridge on offense against the Niners, the TD against the Packers, the receiving TD against the Packers, the leap against the Falcons, and then of course the Super Bowl. Yeah, I’m feeling pretty good.

Sprinkled in there was a top 5 list that Sid Luckman was on. The best Bears QB of all time, who played in the 40s!!! Yes, in all of these highlights, we saw Shane Matthews, Kyle Orton, and Rex Grossman. In all these highlights, we saw amazing defenses. Like I said, some things never change. The defense was good enough to overcome that in the past… We’ll have to rely on them again if we want to win any more games this year. OK, I’m not going there… I’m feeling good. More old Bears highlights coming up… but first, I better walk my dog…
