November 24, 2020: Giving Thanks

Since it is Thanksgiving Week, it’s time for giving thanks. Since you’re reading this right here, right now, we’re talking Chicago sports. No titles since 2016, but still plenty to be thankful for, no? Yes!

Let’s start with that Chicago team who brought us that last title. That’s right, it’s the Chicago Cubs. Talk all the shit you want about them for the last 4 years, which were all playoff appearances minus one year where 163 did us in, the Cubbies finally did it. And yes, nothing since then coming from all our other teams. Some of us will never forget, but maybe some of us need a reminder. I don’t need one, but I can still give thanks for it. Honestly, this will be on my “giving thanks” list for every year from here on out.

Of course we’re always waiting for the next one, and word on the street is telling us that the Sox give us the best chance. After a great 2020 season, the Sox appear ready to be in the title mix for a minute. Yet, they still need pitching… without adding some big arms in the starting rotation, it ain’t going to happen. I do expect them to address that. They did address the manager situation, firing AL Manager of the Year runner up Ricky Renteria. It needed to be done. This team needed to be lead by someone with postseason experience. Enter Tony LaRussa. Say what you may about him, and I will, but he does have the experience. All these whiny Sox fans… like you never drove when you shouldn’t have… like you don’t have a 90 year old uncle who would still love to be in the game. But hey, you got both now. Be thankful!

That brings us to the Blackhawks. Yeah, well, I’ll tell you who I’m NOT thankful for. Stan Bowman should be continuing his career elsewhere after Coach Q and McDonough were both sent packing. Yet, he’s still around, and his latest contribution was to F up our goalie situation heading into next year with an aging core looking for one last Cup run. Thanks Stan? I am thankful that the Hawks made it to the play in games this year due to COVID. It was bonus hockey, and yes, they did win that series before getting steamrolled by Vegas. Do we have another run in us? Young guns must step up; old guys must stay in shape. And who is going to be in goal again?

A sneaky pick to do well in this upcoming season is our Bulls. Gone are the days of GarPax; Boylen has picked up another head coaching gig… at a local high school I believe. OK, that may not be true, but the entrance of AK and crew, the hiring of Billy Donovan, and the drafting of… OK, well 2 out of 3 ain’t bad, and I’m still giving the benefit of the doubt on AK’s first pick of his Bulls career. Lots of young talent on this squad should equal a playoff berth this year. Yeah, I don’t think it’s out of the question. Not ready for that title run, but certainly should be very competitive in the East. Look forward to the return of those days.

Finally, our Bears. Thank you for a great start to the season… OK, that’s it… goodbye, and oh yeah, thank YOU for continuing to read. Enjoy Turkey Week.
