Turkey Day 2020… a Thanksgiving like no other right? Yes… and no. At the end of the day, time was spent with family both in person and online. Time was spent stuffing my face, eating some delicious Thanksgiving foods. Football was watched. Movies were watched. The only thing missing was a nap. Yeah, screw the pandemic and everything else going on in the world. I am still very blessed; still have plenty to be thankful for.
That’s selfish in a way. Not everybody has what I have. I’m definitely not into bragging, but just to have family in my life is enough. My wife, my son… couldn’t ask for anything more. Both my parents are still alive; my father and mother in law are still alive. We have healthy siblings, nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. I know we think there is more to it than just that, but really there’s not. Yes, you do need a roof over your head. Thankfully I do still have a job; thankfully I still am able to help provide that. There are those of us who have none of this.
I bitch about not being able to take a vacation, not being able to hang out with family as much as I’d like. I’m mad that my son hasn’t played his sports in the past 9 months, upset that the small window of my coaching career lost a year. It sucks to wear a mask, to have to be so careful about everything. It sucks having to deliberate over things so much that would normally be no brainers. Yes, all of this and then some, but that’s all “bullshit”. We all have our bullshit though; we all need it… at least we think we do.

Volunteering some of my time. Giving more of my blessings that I have. Yeah, all of that and then some. It really should be bottomless. There should always be something in the well that allows me to help others, whether it’s time or money. Easier said than done, no doubt.
There is one thing that all of us have to be thankful for, at least anybody able to read this right now… that’s life. Regardless of what you have or don’t have, the struggles you’re going through, the bullshit you’re missing, the ultimate gift is just being alive; it hurts to think about people who don’t feel that way. If you just start there, being thankful for your life, and then realize it isn’t just about you, you’re off to a great start. But hey, what do I know… I just talk Chicago sports… Happy Thanksgiving!
