November 28, 2020: Long Gone Prime

Yeah, I watched it. No, I didn’t pay for it. My wife was able to find it on our box, so heck yeah we watched it; not much else to do. When the stream started working, we had some rappers on the screen and figured it was between fight entertainment; it was, and wasn’t. First up, Nate vs some You Tube guy.

It was ugly. Nate was trying to hug him the whole time until he finally got hit upside his temple; I thought he was done then… he was done, but he still got up… barely. Then the stream went out. Fortunately or unfortunately in Nate’s case, the replay of his knockout in the 2nd round was all over Twitter. There was no hiding from that. Plenty of funny stuff about him getting knocked out; I just hope he’s OK. I’ll always remember Nate fondly from his Bulls days. I’ll never forget his best moment that we witnessed in person: the 3 OT win over the Nets in the playoffs. That felt like a long time ago watching this exhibition… wait, they did say this was a professional fight right? That’s a joke.

When the stream returned, I saw another rapper on stage; this time the guy was pretty good, even though it’s been years since his prime; this felt like the theme of the evening. Still, Snoop put on a good show. When he first came on the scene with Dr. Dre… man, good stuff. And that jacket/shirt combo he was rocking reminded us of that classic Doggystyle album. Snoop up there, puffing away on a blunt… hilarious. Then he ends up back in announcer row for the main event. Again, I’ll say he was pretty good. The first time he dropped the uncle line it was funny. There were other witty comments too. I kept wondering if he ever boned Martha Stewart for some reason…

Thankfully the stream lasted throughout the entire main event, which Tyson dominated by the way. Yet like any other “big fight”, there was some BS judging, saving the online sports books and Vegas plenty of money. It was a big time setup. I liked Roy Jones Jr back in the day like everybody else, but if we’re talking prime against prime, it’s no competition. Roy still had some of his moves, even if they were in slow motion. Was really hoping Mike connected on one of those vicious swings. I’m sure Roy’s ribs are sore after this one, but he escaped without Nate Robison type damage; he can thank his skill for that.

Overall, it was entertaining. Like Nate, Snoop, Mike, and Roy, this night reminded me of a long gone prime. Crazy seeing Snoop high as a kite, with one of the sponsors being weedmaps, and then you got Draft Kings as another one. Smoking and gambling, both legal nowadays… not sure if I would have made it through my 20s if they were both legal back in the day… I had enough of both without them being legal. Sorry to see Nate go down hard; glad to see Snoop still doing his thing. Rough to see Mike and Roy so old, although they’re still in way better shape than most of us old guys. Still, brought back some good memories. OK, moving on… hoping to watch another throwback performance Sunday evening.
