November 5, 2020: Stop or Go

Cracking up watching this election stuff continue… There are some states where Donnie wants the counting stopped; the ones he’s winning. There are others where he wants the counting continued; the ones he’s losing. It’s a super smart strategy… haha. I mean… I don’t have any words. But anyways, let’s take this STOP or GO approach with our teams over the years; this should be fun… and painful at the same time.

STOP the 1984 NLCS after the Cubs were up 2-0 on the Padres. Let’s start there. How did we let the sorry ass Padres come back on us? We were mighty that year; the Tigers were also, but… it certainly would have lead to a better World Series than the one that actually did get played. Speaking about the Padres, still without a World Series… ever. That may change soon.

Another easy STOP is with the Cubs up in the 8th inning in the 2003 NLCS with 5 outs to go… just before the Bartman play. Ah yes, I remember it well. We had shots poured out; we were ready to erupt… then the Marlins did, and the rest is another shitty history chapter in the Cubs franchise.

How about GO? Well, I certainly would have liked to think if this were a normal baseball year, the series between the Cubs and Marlins would have been 5 games, and the Cubs would have had a chance to wake up. Most likely, it wouldn’t have mattered. But still would have liked to have a least one more chance this year…

As far as the Sox, certainly a GO on the strike shortened season, when they appeared prime to make some noise. And how about a STOP once they won the World Series in 2005; no more of those since then AND the Cubs won one… so pretty much flush the last 15 years for Sox fans…

Thinking about the Blackhawks, and a STOP moment, brings me to the biggest regret: the 2014 WCF. Up 1-0 in their series vs the Kings, we could have called it then. But noooo… 3 straight losses ensued as the Hawks dug a pretty good hole. The Hawks of course stormed back to send it to Game 7 where the unfortunate deflection took place. This one can be viewed as a GO as well… If this series were a couple more games, I think the Hawks win. When you dig a hole and your season hinges on one game… shit happens.

The Bulls… couple easy ones here. STOP the 2011 Bulls Heat series after the first game where the Bulls kicked their ass. STOP the 2012 Bulls 76ers first round game in the 3rd quarter before the Rose injury. As far as GO, I know 6-0 is perfection, but I would have loved to see the band brought back together for one more run in strike shortened in 1998-1999, to go for that 7th. Like I said, 6-0 has a nice ring to it, but… certainly would have liked somebody outside our organization to dethrone us. Keep them together until they lose…

The Bears… OK, STOP the Super Bowl as soon as Hester returned that kick for a TD; we’re good. That was an all-time moment, followed by one of the worst. GO is pretty easy; let’s play 1 more quarter in 2018 against the Eagles in that playoff game. Pretty confident if we kept that going, things would have turned out differently.

Well, that was fun… sort of. I can think of a lot more; I’m sure you can too. But at the end of the day, we play by the rules that exist; kind of works like that, or at least is supposed to. There are other things that should have been done differently for this election, but making sure all votes are counted is a no brainer… however long it takes… I guess…
