It was worth the wait. 4 days after Election Day, the good news was finally received; we will have a new president. More importantly, our current president will be no more. Thankfully, enough people voted to make this happen; surprisingly plenty of people voted to keep this guy where he was at. Understanding this is key to moving forward together.

What is the worst part about yourself? What are the worst qualities you have seen from people throughout your life? We have to live with our warts; hopefully we all try to work on those, try to shave them down, remove them maybe. Maybe it’s not that hard to understand why folks voted for Trump; I read that if you voted for him you are a racist. Maybe, definitely part of it; maybe there’s more to it…

Have you known liars in your life? Have you ever lied? Aren’t all politicians liars? Well, yes, yes, and yes. One clarification: he was never a politician. Maybe this is what drew you to him the first time around. Maybe you think picking somebody who doesn’t know anything about the job to do that job is smart. Maybe you think staying at a Holiday Inn last night qualifies you to do heart surgery. It was not wrong to want something new, something better, however, this wasn’t it. Look, for me, it was really easy. How can I want somebody who made fun of a disabled person as the president of our country?

Yes, he acted like a bully; made fun of, disrespected people… all kinds of people, that eventually sank his ass. Maybe you knew a bully growing up; maybe you were a bully growing up. Maybe you think it’s cool to be friends with that bully, sitting back making fun of people. Maybe all of us have done that at one point in our lives; maybe not. Either way, that ain’t it; that is not the way to go… that is not the example we want to see from someone we’re supposed to look up to. Maybe you’ve never looked up to any president…

Do you like watching reality TV? I think we all have watched a show like that, even if we don’t like to admit it. He is a reality TV star. Problem is, this was REAL reality… not some sham that you try to put together for ratings, and he just got cancelled. But think about everything else about him. Anything else folks have in common with him? Overweight; I could stand to lose a few pounds. Someone who doesn’t eat right; who doesn’t like McDonalds every once in a while. Financial issues; I’ve had my share (disclaimer: I wasn’t born with a silver spoon in my mouth and $250M in my bank account though). Spray tan; never did that, but plenty of people do. Golfs a lot; who wouldn’t rather golf than do their job. You see, whether you like to admit it or not, we all have things in common with him. Difference is, none of us are president of the United States. Problem is, we don’t want someone with all of the bad qualities that exist in our country, and our world for that matter, to lead our country. THAT is not how we want to be represented across the entire world; well, at least most of us didn’t want that any more.

You see, there’s a lot more to it. Unfortunately, there are people who will always have the ugliness; some ugliness is worse than others. There are those of us who try to be better; there are those people who aren’t interested in change. By electing a new president, we are trying to be better; we are giving ourselves a chance to be better. This doesn’t make everything better today, but it sure feels like it. Will this president be able to deliver on his promises? Well, at least he is a decent human being with some class and dignity that will represent us well on a national and global level; that’s a start.

And then there’s the end; today, Trump means a little bit less than he did yesterday. Maybe he meant a lot to you over these past 4 years; maybe you felt he was responsible for the feeling of a dark cloud over our lives. Maybe you tried to tune him out. It’s just time for him to go away, but we know that’s not going to happen, at least not as soon as we’d like. But when he goes away, then what? Then we still have OUR problems; these problems will exist regardless of who is president. We can judge folks as long as we want, but the only people that can truly make change is US.

None of this is an excuse for Trump; none of this is said to feel sorry for him. He deserves everything that he’s got coming to him; he is NOT a victim. And I’m sure we’re all ready to see it happen; I’m sure it will feel good. I know we’re all excited to gloat about “our” victory, his loss. Yet at the end of the day, WE still have our differences, our problems. The exciting part, is that WE have the power to do something about it every single day. Our excuse is gone, now what? Good riddance to the worst president in US history; welcome to the next chapter. Good luck to us all.
