October 1, 2020: Next Year

The first day of October brought us some more playoff baseball. Besides the Cubs tanking Game 1, I’ve been pretty excited to watch these games. Stacking them all up like this on a single day gives it that March Madness type feel. Playoff games from noon to 11pm… sign me up!

I was actually happy the Cubs game got postponed because I was not going to be able to watch it. Yeah, that thing called work was squarely in the way on Thursday; I may be able to work around that Friday… which is when game 2 of the Cubs game will be held. But the Sox, yeah, they played on Thursday with the season on the line.

I didn’t see everything that happened; I wasn’t stuck on the game, but I was checking in. When I first checked the score, I saw the Sox had jumped out to a 1-0 lead… on a Luis Robert 487 ft home run!!! My God… I had to see this. Talk about a no doubter; they said it was the longest postseason home run in statcast history… did I read that right? I stand corrected; it was 2nd to Willson Contreras… Still, see this one for yourself; it was impressive. Then it was 3-0 Sox; they were on their way. The thing I didn’t realize was that the Sox had pulled their starter in the 1st inning…

Hey, I have no room to talk. We had Joe Maddon manage our pitching staff; he made some questionable moves to say it nicely, especially in that magical 2016 postseason run. But pulling a starter in the first inning of a winner take all game? I don’t want to say I told you so, but… is it time to get a real manager now White Sox fans? Renteria seems nice enough; I’m sure his guys love him. But how do you do this? Was the White Sox bullpen that good this year? Good enough to cover 8+ innings? Was this 3rd starter THAT bad? If so, why even start him? Sure, starting pitching is the number one offseason priority, but managing that pitching staff is the most important thing for a manager to do. This game will be front and center on the Rick Renteria report card.

The thing is, which makes me really not understand it, is that the Sox can hit… unlike my Cubs. They can score some runs. Worst case, he doesn’t get out of the first inning clean… so what? You just know the Sox were going to hit. Yes, they only scored 4 runs in this one, but like the Cubs, and in this particular postseason the Reds, they had a ton of missed opportunities. Every time I checked in on the game, the Sox had guys on base. Outside of handling the pitching staff differently, a few more timely hits would have had the Sox moving on; they could have bailed Rick out. I guess Keuchel sucking in Game 2 really screwed the plan in this three game series…

So next year it is… for that crosstown World Series. My head is telling me the Cubs will be joining the Sox soon enough on that couch to watch the rest of the playoffs; my heart still has hope. But Sox fans… yeah, you have some brighter days ahead. It’s not quite like 2015 for the Cubs, and I’m sure Sox fans are sick of hearing that, but it was definitely the start of something on the south side. I’m sure this loss hurts, but the promise of the future should help put this one behind you pretty quickly; the hiring of a new manager would help too. The Sox will be back in the playoffs again next year; my question is will the Cubs? The Cubs may need to wake up on Friday to save this season, and keep it rolling on Saturday, because unlike the Sox, the future on the north side isn’t as certain…
