October 10, 2019: A Dog’s Life

I didn’t want to go. I knew that if we went, we would not leave empty handed. But no, my wife insisted we would just look. So we walked in… It was mass chaos. Dozens of dogs barking and barking, and barking. It was like when I was in Oakland, walking down the row of Raider tailgaters. It was mostly pitbulls, looking vicious as hell, not really making a case for them to get adopted. Then there she was…laying there, head in her paws, looking up at us as we walked by, with those sad, sad puppy dog eyes, quiet as can be. I knew it was over. We took her outside for a “feel her out” walk. It was just checking the box; we knew we had found a new member of our family.

That was over 8 years ago; she turned 9 this October 10th. They didn’t know her exact date of birth, but only her approximate age. We gave her the birthdate of 10/10/10; easy to remember. We also changed the name they gave her; Tabitha wasn’t cutting it. When thinking of her name, my newlywed wife said we should name her after my old Nissan Maxima. Maxie it was. They also told us she was half rott and half shepherd. She’s more like part rott, pit, sharpie, Doberman, etc…a true mutt. We didn’t know how big she would get; she leveled off at about 65 pounds. She was only a fraction of that when we took her home. She was obviously malnourished, most likely mistreated causing some serious anxiety issues. She threw up in the car on the way home; I had to carry her up the stairs. She settled in after that.

She still loves to play like when she was a puppy. She hates loud noises, especially thunderstorms and the 4th of July in the city. We finally found a crate that would hold her; we call it the federal penitentiary crate. We could only fix so many door trims and doors. She’s doing fine. My son picked out a toy for her birthday. It was a Thanos stuffed toy; can’t believe that thing survived the night. She really tears up those little toys. She loves her front and backyard, one of the great things about having a house vs a condo. We probably still don’t do enough with her. Our son came along about a year later and stole her spotlight. I still remember her sleeping outside his room when he was a baby.

Yeah, she mainly eats, sleeps, and craps; a dog’s life doesn’t sound so bad. She’ll probably be around for many more years, definitely don’t like thinking of that day, but figured I’d give her a blog all to herself. Happy Birthday pups!
