October 14, 2020: Opening Move

Well, the Sox did what they had to do; they fired manager Rick Renteria. It was the opening move for an offseason that shouldn’t be that complicated. I wasn’t the only one who saw this coming. I’m just glad the Sox had the balls to do it.

Poor Ricky. Where does he go from here? He never got a chance with a good Cubs team; he took a good Sox team to the playoffs. What else could he do? The Cubs had a once in a lifetime opportunity come along with Joe Maddon becoming available; it was just bad timing for Ricky. Meanwhile, you would assume the Sox already have their guy lined up. One thing they did know, or one thing that they think they know, is that Ricky wouldn’t be the guy to get them to the next level; I agree. But what does Ricky do now? He’ll end up somewhere on his feet; some franchise will give him the chance to prove if he can be that guy. He never really got a chance to prove it, although the signs certainly point to the answer being no. That’s not to say that with these hard lessons, he can get another chance and absolutely kill it. Or maybe he’ll just be a bench coach or something…

The Sox didn’t stop there. They fired long time pitching coach Don Cooper. I really don’t have an opinion one way or another with him. I do know that he had a big personality. There were pitchers that threw pretty well with him as pitching coach; there were others that didn’t. If anything, this just goes back to the Sox knowing who their guy is, and giving him the opportunity to bring in his own pitching coach was a pre-requisite. Speaking about their guy…

Tell me it isn’t Tony LaRussa. I honestly didn’t even know he was still alive. For reports to be confirmed that the Sox are going to talk to him about this opportunity, while at the same time immediately ruling Ozzie out; that don’t make no sense. Personally, I don’t think either should be the guy, but to consider one but not the other… that shit with Ozzie runs deep huh? Anyways, bringing in a recycled choice at manager doesn’t feel right for this team. They need somebody new, somebody with experience; somebody with a track record of success. You’ve heard the name AJ out there; yes, there is AJ Pierzynski too that has been mentioned, but I’m talking about AJ Hinch. Sure, the Sox will have to learn how to bang on trash cans and all, but this seems like the best choice. They can’t be serious about LaRussa…

Once the new manager is announced, the Sox must proceed to part 2 of their simple offseason plan: get a big time starting pitcher. Bauer is the easy choice, although he does seem a bit off. But his big mouth, antics, and swagger may fit in with this young Sox team; will the new manager approve? Whether it’s Bauer or not, they need a big time starter either via free agency or trade to put at the top of this rotation with Lucas and Dallas. Now that there will be a new skipper, getting a new big arm, will complete the major tasks for the Sox this offseason. Do that and you’re looking at one of the World Series favorites. Hire LaRussa… don’t get a starter… well, what do I know…
