October 16, 2023: Going Streaking

The day to day grind is real. Whether we’re talking about personal, professional, or other, sometimes we get lost in this grind. Sometimes this grind is tough; sometimes it’s not so bad. Most of the time, if not all times, it’s definitely worth it; that’s the important part. OK, where we going with this? I’m talking about the pipe dream to become a professional sports gambler, that’s where I’m going with this… haha. But, pipe dream and haha, only kind of… With this latest dive into this “hobby”, I’ve taken it more seriously; I’m trying to learn from all my past mistakes, and believe me, there are a lot of them. I still make mistakes, no doubt, but I’m also trying to do my homework as much as possible. Sometimes my day job, family, and other things prevent this, but I get it in when I can; it’s been working. Sure, not getting rich or anything, yet, but definitely making a profit, which is where you want to be. In fact, lately, I’ve been going streaking… 9 straight days of profit; I think that’s a record. In fact, that makes 13 out of the last 14 days where I haven’t lost. Starting with the small profit on Monday night, I’m starting my 5th straight week of profit. This means something, right?

To put it in perspective… $100 investment recouped, $250 profit banked, minus the $50 back into my account at the start of NFL season. My balance was down to $3; now it sits close to $150. Again, nobody getting rich here. But the consistent profit, over time… the learning from my mistakes, in small denominations… the effort in trying to take the time to build something from the ground up vs get rich quick on a 20 team parlay… it’s all part of the process; I don’t want to skip any steps… I don’t want to run when I’m still learning to walk. My units were $1… now they’re $5. I think… what if I added a zero to that unit? What if I added zeroes? Still not rich, but now we’re talking. A few zeroes? OK, slow down.

Seeing these results is encouraging; it makes me think that maybe I’m actually getting somewhere. Still, need to be cautious… like this past weekend, when I liked a lot of college football games, but chose NOT to bet; it was a smart move. I still need to learn from my mistakes, like betting w/my heart on the Bears and chasing it too; that cut into my profit this weekend. I still need to practice discipline, quite possibly the hardest quality to possess when trying to do this. I think about the movie Rounders… and how Kinnish (?) built a living by playing cards and NOT chasing pipe dreams with big bets, etc; is that the grind I want? Or, like Matt Damon, build up to eventually take your shot; maybe… when I’m ready. But will I flush my bankroll down the toilet like him and have to start all over again??? More to come…

Also, in this profession, you have to keep in mind Papa Vegas; he will be involved. Sometimes, like the Jets Chiefs Sunday night game the other day, I’ll be on the right side of it; sometimes, and there are too many to mention, I’ll be on the wrong side of it. There is no “I got screwed by Vegas”… that shouldn’t be a surprise; you need to be prepared for that, and try to anticipate it, and try to be on the right side more than not.

OK, enough tooting my horn; I don’t really like to do that, but I’m trying to motivate myself here. Let’s keep at it; let’s keep chipping away, building up that bankroll, stacking days of profit, getting prepared for the next level. Time to get back to the grind. A MLB playoff game, 9 NHL games, and 3 obscure-ass College Football games on Tuesday night; where to begin…
