October 17, 2019: Players Game

We’re moving on to the players. I feel pretty good about the talent provided from up top. I agree that Joe must share the blame for this year, just as he should have gotten credit for the previous four. But this wasn’t his fault. At the end of the day, message hitting home or message falling on deaf ears, why does it matter so much? It’s a players game; they are the ones that need to make it happen when it’s all said and done. It’s great to have a manager put you in the best possible situation to succeed; it’s great to play for a manager that you like. But great doesn’t always equal winning. Why not?

Well, this is why we’re doing this. Why didn’t this talent laden roster with a hall of fame manager fail? What was missing? Back to that message… it’s pretty obvious that Joe’s message didn’t have the same impact as it did before. You know what’s more meaningful than your manager telling you something? It’s one of the guys telling you something. That’s what was there in 2016 in the form of David Ross, and no, that doesn’t mean I want him to be the manager. He played the perfect, very critical role of keeping the guys honest in the dugout. You don’t want to listen to Joe, that’s OK. You will listen to me; we, the players, will keep each other honest. Ross helped the guys keep each other accountable. Who is that guy nowadays?

I would think Rizzo could be THAT guy; I’m not sure if he is. I’m sure he’s tried. He seemed to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of Ross’ presence. I’m sure he was taking notes, hopeful to take over that role. Does it not work because he’s one of the best players on the team? Do you need a role player for that? Heyward maybe? Maybe, or maybe he’s making too much money, much more than his performance calls for. Probably tough to be that guy. Zobrist? Doesn’t necessarily seem like the take charge guy, plus he went through some personal stuff this year, so he wasn’t even around. How about one of the starters? Could Lester be that guy; that is Ross’ boy after all. No, I don’t think so. I think it needs to be an everyday player. I think we’ve found a need going into 2020.

Another need that remains is a bonafide leadoff hitter. I know Dex’s numbers haven’t been great since he’s left, and honestly, were they that great in 2016? Not necessarily, but he set the table. Remember, you go we go? Again, it wasn’t a superstar that we were missing, but a role player. Can we address both of these needs with 1 player?

OK, so we were missing these guys. Heading into next year, we need a veteran on the roster to help keep the guys in check, and a guy that can serve as our leadoff hitter. But what about the guys that were here? I started off saying our roster was loaded; I stand by that. We should have still had enough, no? OK, let’s take a closer look.
