October 18, 2020: One Ticket Punched

I was just getting used to the idea of the World Series being the Dodgers vs the Astros… I didn’t even realize that the NL was up first on Saturday night. When I finally saw that, it was 3-1 Dodgers in the bottom of the 8th. Yep, LA won their 2nd straight game, tying the series, sending it to the ultimate game in sports. Speaking of that ultimate game…

It was the anniversary of the only other time in MLB history when a team came back from a 3-0 deficit. I remember it well. I was happy for the Red Sox, even though it was just after the Cubs collapse in 2003. I was happy to see one team break their drought. I knew it would have to be something historic for the Cubs to finally win it all, like coming back from a 3-0 deficit to beat their rivals to advance to the World Series and win their first title in forever; I was close… it was only a 3-1 deficit… against another team with a long drought. Speaking of long droughts, the other Sox, the Chicago version, won their first title in forever the following year in 2005. The Cubs had to wait a bit more before finally getting theirs; the Indians are still waiting…

Back to the present and the game at hand. I was convinced that the Astros would repeat the feat. I imagine that the Rays had more pressure on them, after letting the Astros come all the way back to tie the series. Thing is ex-Astro Charlie Morton was on the mound; he was dealing. I was tuned in when the Rays manager took him out of the game; I knew at that moment that the Astros would comeback again. Did he not learn his lesson? Taking Snell out of Game 6 didn’t work out; it reminded me of another manager who pulled pitchers too early… But Kevin Cash stuck to that script that they followed all year, using all these pitchers in pretty much every game. To that point, I like the move. Although you need to make adjustments to your game in the postseason, don’t get away from who you are. The reliever came in with 2 on and 2 out and got the inning ending double play.

In the 8th, the Astros had another shot; they cut the lead in half against a dude that was throwing 100. 100 miles per hour!?! I miss having a reliever who comes out of the pen throwing that kind of fire. I’ll never forget being at Wrigley when Chapman would be brought into the game. Watching the pitch, then turning to check the MPH, and cheering loudly when we saw the triple digits. Speaking of the Cubs offseason needs… get a guy or two who throws 100; they are not that uncommon any more. He finally controlled the 100 and stuck with it, getting out of the inning with the lead. Three outs later, there was one ticket punched: the Rays were heading back to the World Series. I think most people are happy to see that happen.

Like I said, I was getting ready for the Astros Dodgers series; that would have been good. I originally wanted a Braves Rays series, and since I’m really feeling like the Dodgers are going to win on Sunday, it probably will be. Thank God I wasn’t betting on baseball because my money would have been on the Stros; now my money would be on the Dodgers. Who will it be? First thing’s first though… Bears Panthers…
