October 19, 2020: Never Be Satisfied

Another week, another win for Da Bears. 5-1 now! Are you not entertained?

I am. I like it when the Bears win games. I also like when the Packers lose games, so I was really damn happy yesterday. I should have said “First Place” Bears, because that’s where we’re sitting in the standings. They say we’re the worst 5-1 team in the NFL. Now, we’re the worst first place team in the NFL. I can only hope that one day, in about 3.5 months, we can be the worst team to ever win a Super Bowl. Some people will never be satisfied.

I get it though; I do. Well, it depends how long you’ve been a Bears fan to really get it, and I’ve been one for a while. It’s because we’ve seen this movie before. Whenever the Bears have been good, almost every damn time, it’s because the defense carries us. And actually, although the 85 Bears defense is legendary, our offense was pretty damn good that year too. I think back to 2006, and how good our defense was then. I think back to our offense that year. Hey, you have to be halfway decent to make it that far. Thomas Jones was a stud; Cedric Benson was a great complementary back. But Grossman… How about more recent history in 2018? How good was our defense that year; really fricking good. And how’d that turn out? Yes, we all remember Parkey and the you know what, but the offense was no great shakes either. What about the Cutler years? Our defense was no slouch for most of those, but… And how about AFTER our one and only Super Bowl title? The defense was still really good, actually statistically better the following year in 86, but.. how was our QB situation then? Yes, it’s the same old story for our Bears, and although we are winning, and although that is really, really good, and although I’m enjoying the hell out of it, what is going to happen down the road?

Well, what I hope to have happen is that the offense gets better. We don’t have to be Chiefs level good, but we have to be better than we are today. I do think that is a real possibility, but again, I’m always thinking positive. Because to this point in the year, it really hasn’t mattered who has been the QB, because neither one of them has done much. Well, hold on a second… the Bears have a 5-1 record, so they’ve had to do something right, right? Yes, they have, but yes, it’s been the defense carrying us again for the most part. They’ve even had to work through the crappy officiating that’s been going on; my God was Sunday bad. Maybe Nagy should send the league a tape of Kyle Fuller leading with the shoulder, because that’s still legal right? And maybe on that tape should be the questionable PI calls the Bears have been flagged for, like Jaylon Johnson and his perfect coverage on that play, while the opponents strangle Robinson in the end zone and get away with it. Yes, the defense has resembled 2018 more than 2019 and that’s a very good thing. But, the defense can only hold teams under 20 points for so long; there are teams where this may not be possible. And when this happens, when we meet these other teams, will the offense be able to answer the bell?

It’s great to talk about the issues with the offense sitting at 5-1; imagine sitting at 1-5? But I think the reason why we’re all a bit anxious, more than just the QB or the play calling, is because we have a really good defense again. We have a Super Bowl ready defense if I may; hey, our special teams coverage ain’t that bad either. The question is, and always has been, will the offense be good enough to bring home another Super Bowl title? Thankfully, we don’t have to answer this question right now; the offense doesn’t have to answer the bell this week, but they will eventually. This is what is on my mind.

But I’m going to live in the present, and my God, what a beautiful day it is with the Bears at 5-1 in first place. I’m going to remain optimistic about the offense, because IF they get their stuff together… well, yeah, I think about that. Bear Down!!!
