October 20, 2019: Until Next Year

So what have we learned in this week long look at the state of the Cubs? I learned that I miss them. Watching the 2019 postseason just isn’t the same without us. I also learned that there is not one reason why it didn’t come together for the Cubs in 2019. In summary…

I think the Cubs had enough talent on the roster to get the job done. I think Joe deserves blame for this year, just as he deserves credit for the past 4. I’m OK with Joe departing, will love him forever, and wish him well. The starting pitching was solid not spectacular, and we needed some spectacular to take our season to the next level. The relief pitching was streaky, too much on the bad side, and were full of guys who didn’t perform as well as they have, including a key guy who pitched a grand total of 0 innings due to injury. The offense, I know I didn’t really hit on this point, but they were too much boom or bust. There was no small ball, no manufacturing of runs, no situational hitting, bad baserunning, and either home runs or strikeouts. We were missing a clubhouse leader… a guy that isn’t a superstar, but served the role of keeping the guys in check, collectively. We were missing a leadoff hitter, which hurt our overall production. I didn’t mention the shaky defense either… Is that enough for you? Does it make more sense why the Cubs are still not playing baseball?

So what now? Hire Joe Girardi, although that doesn’t look like it’s going to happen. I hope Theo and company make the right call in this very important decision. Add pitching. We’ll have 4 starters returning; do we trust Chatwood to enter the rotation or keep him in the bullpen where he was valuable this year? Do we bring the kid back up from AAA? Do we go after Gerritt Cole? Add bullpen depth. We saw our depth disappear quickly with injury and underachieving performance. You can never have enough arms. Get a leadoff hitter. It doesn’t have to be a superstar; it has to be someone who sets the table a la Mr. You Go We Go. Bring in some veteran role players; we’ll need a backup catcher once we move either Willson or Victor, so there will be an opening. That’s all I’m asking for…

The Cubs window is NOT closed. Yes, other teams aren’t getting worse; everybody is putting their best foot forward. We still have enough, and with a smart offseason, can be right back in the middle of the postseason conversation. Our core of Bryant, Rizzo, and Baez is a pretty good big three. These guys should never wear another uniform. OK, I think I’m done.

It’s been fun (not really) to bring some closure to the Cubs season. The next time I talk about them will be my opinion of the new manager. Until then, there’s been some other stuff going on… let’s get back to the present.
