October 22, 2019: The National Case

posted in: Cubs | 0

The World Series began Tuesday night in Houston with an unlikely National League participant. With the mighty Dodgers, the division champ Braves, the hot Cardinals, and the pesky Brewers, certainly the other Wild Card team from DC wouldn’t make it. Yes, yes they did, and I’m glad.

OK, I preferred the Braves to get to the Series, but the Nationals were my 2nd choice. They started earning their way into my heart with a Wild Card victory over the Brewers; welp, still no World Series champs for Milwaukee’s best. Once the Cardinals beat the Braves in the other series, I wanted the Dodgers to pull it out, putting aside my hate for the Dodgers, thinking they had the better chance to beat the Cardinals; this was one case where I was glad I was wrong. The Nationals not only beat the Dodgers, then they kicked the crap out of the Cardinals. Yeah, beating the 3 teams I hate the most in the NL certainly gains a piece of my heart.

It doesn’t hurt they have ex-Cub Davey Martinez in the dugout. Liked him as a player, served as the bench coach in 2016 under Maddon, I’m glad to see him doing so well. The other big factor they have going for them in my book is that they never won one; I always have a rooting interest for teams in that situation. To see them win their first ever title would be very cool.

On the other side of the field, it’s the Astros. I like a lot of their players…. Altuve & Verlander are my 2 favorites, but I don’t want them to win again. Yeah, I know, they’ve only won 1 World Series in their franchise history, but it was recent, and since the Cubs haven’t won 2 yet, I don’t want the Astros too. I still remember when they talked crap about the Cubs, and how they wouldn’t be like us with that title hangover, or something like that. Truth is, just making it back to the Series moves them ahead of the current Cubs team. Their big hitters on offense have outperformed ours; their pitching the same, with a guy in Verlander that we could have had, and a guy in Cole that we once took out in Pittsburgh in a winner take all game. It’s not like I have any bad blood with them due to past matchups, but the hater in me always finds something, but this is more about the case for the Nationals than anything.

When a team defeats a team or teams that I hate in the postseason, they gain my appreciation… kind of like the Giants that year they defeated the Packers and the Patriots. No other reason to like them, but the result of those 2 games. I even have more reasons to like the Nats; maybe it wouldn’t have been the same if they had beat us back in 2017, but they didn’t. And here we are… Go Nats!
