October 22, 2020: Easy Decision

The Rays evened up the series in Game 2 with a 6-4 victory over the Dodgers. Coming into it, I wanted the Rays to win, but didn’t mind if the Dodgers pulled it out. Once the games started, I forgot about the Dodgers winning; Rays all the way! It’s an easy decision; not sure what the hell got into me.

I know, I was thinking about my childhood Little League team. I was thinking about how the Dodgers had been so close but haven’t won since 88. I kind of wanted Clayton Kershaw to get one, and really like Mookie Betts game. Yeah, yeah… I remember now. But here’s the thing. Although the team I played for WAS the Dodgers growing up, it was random, right? How did I know what team we would be when I walked into the Boys Club at 6 years old? They said it was the Dodgers, and I was like OK; I mean, what was I going to say? Then the whole close but no cigar thing… the whole 32 years since a title. Who cares? 32 years ain’t shit, plus the team they’re playing, the Rays, have NEVER won a World Series. Sure, they haven’t been around nearly as long, but to see a franchise get its first is way cooler than some little old 32 year drought. And although I like some of their players, the fact that the Rays are at the bottom of the MLB payroll while the Dodgers are at the top, makes me root for the Rays even more. They are true underdogs here, in every sense of the word, even though they had the best record in the AL this year. That’s what makes them scary; that’s why I want them to win.

The Dodgers have a history of getting to the World Series plenty of times. Counting this year, they’ve been there 21 times; 10 more times than my Cubbies. However, they’ve only won 6 World Series titles compared to 3 from the Cubs. At 6-14 on the biggest stage, the Dodgers remind me of some NBA superstar from the Lakers… No not 4-6 LeQueen… 1-8 Jerry West! Since I was looking at that list, we always hear about Russell’s 11 titles, but what about Sam Jones with 10? And how about Havlicek, KC Jones, and Tom Sanders at a perfect 8-0?!?! OK, back to baseball… it certainly feels as though the Dodgers have not taken full advantage of all their opportunities; recent vintage tells us the same, losing their last 2 appearances. Meanwhile, the Rays are making only their 2nd appearance. Considering they only started playing in 1998, that’s not horrible. Can they win their first in their 22nd year?

I haven’t sat on the games, but they’ve been in the rotation, plus checking the score on my phone, plus watching a recap in the morning on MLB network. It’s not Quick Pitch, but it’s still good stuff that my son and I tune into every morning. However, we already have a substitute lined up… Good Morning Football on NFL Network is pretty cool. By this time next week, that will take over exclusively. Anyone think we got 7 games coming in this series? I think it’s a good possibility. Squeezing that last drop out of baseball for this year…
