October 6, 2020: Managing Through COVID

If there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that 2020 has been unprecedented. It has taken its toll on every single one of us. Even those of us who don’t stress out about anything, have felt it; imagine those who stress out in general… One of the most difficult things has been managing my fantasy teams.

Fantasy baseball was challenging. Thankfully I would never pick a Cardinal on my fantasy team (OK, never say never… I did have Albert Pujols on my team when he was on top) and I rarely pick a Marlin; those two teams were full of jagoffs who didn’t care and were out for a while, ravaging rosters in our league. Although I didn’t have any of those guys, I did have guys on teams that they played, which presented some challenges. I did get hurt later in the year when the As and Mariners missed some time; I had a couple guys from each team. And then there were all the doubleheaders that needed to be played to make up for this missed time. For hitters, it seems great, but a lot of times, guys don’t play both halves of the doubleheader, and even if they do, I lose out on 4 innings and potentially 2 more ABs from each of them. Then on the flip side, there were pitchers who normally would not throw a CG and get mega points that were doing so… in 7 innings; I didn’t think that should have counted, especially when it happened against me. Yeah, through it all, I think I did pretty well, ending up in the championship game. I did come up short however, paying the price for late season injuries that hit some key guys on my team, you know, the “normal” stuff.

Now we roll into fantasy football season; this week was interesting. COVID finally reached its way into the NFL world. For those folks saying they should put the brakes on the season, get real. This money train is not stopping, 200K+ deaths or not. Yes, one game did have to get rescheduled, and I did feel that missing Juju in my starting lineup this week. The worst one was the Pats and Chiefs game. I have Patrick Mahomes. I decided to not take a chance and wait for a game to be played on Monday night; I rolled with Justin Herbert at QB. It actually paid off, with him outscoring Mahomes on the week. It didn’t matter; I lost anyways. The big scare was the Lions Saints game. We’re talking Brees, Kamara, and Golladay. That would have been brutal. I’m sure there will be more landmines ahead for this season, but this experienced manager will do his best to get through it.

You know, the fantasy managers get forgotten with all this pandemic stuff. Put yourself in our shoes. This is serious stuff; it’s challenging enough, without having to deal with an ongoing pandemic. We should be rewarded with navigating this season. We should be honored, like the healthcare workers, the essential workers throughout the world. We’re doing God’s work here; recognize and realize. No more COVID impact in the NFL!!! Hell no, we won’t stop playing… fantasy owners unite!!!
