September 10, 2020: Comeback

posted in: Cubs | 0

Hey, what do you know? The Cubs finally came from behind and won a game. As I stated earlier this week, the Cubs have come back and won exactly 1 game after being down by 2 or more runs. After Thursday night’s late night affair with the Reds, make that 2!

I can’t lie… going down 3-0 early didn’t feel good. I always try to keep hope alive, but… we’ve seen this before. Cubs get down; Cubs lose. Put Sonny Gray into the equation and a comeback seemed really improbable; I don’t mind being wrong sometimes. The Cubs now hold a 3 game lead in the NL Central with 15 games remaining on the schedule. Problem is, the Cardinals still have 23 games to play!

Maybe I should know this, but will the Cards finish all their games? I don’t think so. So then… will the division be decided by winning percentage? Either way, the Cubs still need to keep winning games. Destiny is still in our control; that’s really the only way to go. Good luck to the Reds on their trip to the bottom of the standings; winning this series vs them bumped them back 6.5 games and 6 games under 500. Are they tapping out? It’s time to bump somebody else back in the standings. With 3 games against the Brewers on tap, and with the Brewers 5 games back, the Cubs could put one nail in their coffin this weekend as well. That would leave 4 with the Pirates as the only division games left.

Man this season has move quickly; definitely not complaining though. Who knows how things would play out in a regular 162; who cares at this point. The Cubs need to win the division, period, and then see how this free for all in the postseason will play out. Again, with Darvish and Hendricks as the 1-2 punch, I feel some level of confidence. I do have a question though; who is 3?

Easy answer is Jon Lester. With his experience, postseason experience, championship pedigree, not a bad guy to run out there as your third starter. With Quintana & Chatwood on the IL, and Adzolay still learning how to pitch, this is our only option, right? Well, how do you feel about Alec Mills? Is there some world where he starts a potential 3rd playoff game? I don’t think so. Not with Rossy as our manager, not with the relationship between them two. You know what; I’m OK with that. Mills has been doing well, but after Yu and Kyle, it’s got to be Jon; that is the easy answer.

Easy thing to do is to keep winning ballgames, keep winning series. If the Cubs can keep this up, we will check that first box and get back to where this team belongs, the postseason. Go Cubs!
