September 12, 2019: Splitting in San Diego

posted in: Cubs | 0

All year long it has seemed like the Cubs have had to salvage too many series.  This latest series in San Diego was more of the same.  After a series opening win, the Cubs were on the brink of losing 3 straight, until they pulled out the finale.  We’ll certainly take it.  Didn’t think we’d be splitting in San Diego, but better than losing 3 out of 4.

Can you go into any series, especially a 4 gamer, on the road, and truly believe that you should win every game?  That’s a lot to ask of any team, especially one like the Cubs who have been the model of inconsistency all year long.  Realistically, I was looking for 3 out of 4.  I knew we’d be facing Paddack.  I know all about him being on my fantasy baseball team this year.  He’s got good stuff.  He showed that stuff vs the Cubs this time around.  It was the night before that really hurt; the comeback that tied it, then losing it in extras with 3 straight walks.  Sorry to bring that back up.  The series finale was much better.  Yet, it still wasn’t easy.

Felt good for most of the game until of course the bottom of the 9th, when for some damn reason, we’d have to face Machado as the tying run with the bases loaded and 2 outs.  Then after hitting him, we’d have to go through the Padres bringing the game winning run to the plate.  Living through this season, you can’t tell me a part of you thought that ball was going to get hit out of the park.  It’s like all those fears from Cubs teams of yesteryear are back.  I mean, it’s always there a bit… not counting your chickens until that 27th out is recorded; at least that’s how I am.  But even more so this year, taking gut shot after gut shot tough losses.  The one thing I will say about this Cubs team, is that they keep getting up; that shows something.

I remember feeling this way about the Blackhawks Stanley Cup teams.  I remember seeing them lose games that may have caused other teams to fold.  Yet, for the Blackhawks, they did not.  You see, they had pretty much been through it all; they may have been shaken, but never broken by tough losses.  I see those same qualities in the Cubs, never more than this year.  I don’t want to relive all the tough ones we gave away this year, but there are plenty… you know.  And yet, here we sit in the middle of a playoff race in mid-September.  Ask me if I’d take that every year, and you’re damn right I would.  I wouldn’t trade this for anything.

So this splitting a road series thing isn’t that bad, considering what we’ve been through.  Now we headed back home to face Pittsburgh.  I wonder how that series will go…  If there was a series that you felt the Cubs should sweep at home, it would be this one, right?  Go Cubs!
