September 13, 2020: Take What We Can Get

posted in: Bears | 0

Well that was fun… The Bears won their first game of the year for the first time in 7 tries. Yeah, it was a game we shouldn’t have won; yeah, Mitch looked like Mitch for most of the game. Yeah, the defense didn’t look great. We can talk about all of that, but at the end of the day, I’m happy as hell that the Bears started off 1-0.

How many games were there that the Bears should have won but didn’t? I’m sure we can all go through that list in our brains, picking out the woulda coulda shoulda games; the recent playoff game comes to mind. One thing before we continue; I wish people would stop saying double doink. You’re beating a dead horse, kind of like the whole Mahomes, Watson, Trubisky thing. Get the hell over it already. We don’t need to hear that shit every week like it’s just happened. We’re trying to move forward here. OK, so my point was, that every team wins games they shouldn’t, or loses games they should have won. Thing is, I don’t see a column on the standings for those type of games; we don’t replay those playoff games that fall in that category either. What happens, happens. And what happened on Sunday, was that the Bears won.

I cannot believe that Detroit rookie RB dropped that game winning TD pass. For everybody feeling bad about Jaylon Johnson’s welcome to the NFL moment when he got trucked, how about D’Andre Swift? Feel bad for the kid, but when I saw that ball hit the turf, I went nuts; it was the closest thing to a miracle that you will witness during a game. The Bears were destined to win this one. And by the way, I think Johnson did a pretty damn good job in his first NFL start. The rest of the defense? Well, let’s just say they’ve had better days. Do we miss Goldman that much? I knew we would; do we think anybody can get him to change his mind about playing this year? Didn’t say Mack’s name much, although I did see him getting held a few times. The defense played pretty blah for most of the game, but when it counted, minus the game saving drop, the defense stopped them when they had to, and created that huge turnover. Surely they will have to play better for us to be serious contenders this year, but on Sunday, they did just enough.

Speaking about doing just enough, enter Mitch Trubisky… the one quarter wonder. For most of the game, he looked like the Trubisky everybody is trying to run out of town; in the 4th quarter, he looked like a QB who wants to take full advantage of his last chance on this team. It wasn’t all his fault though… earlier in the game. There were some poor throws, but there were also a couple drops; there was that penalty in the end zone against Robinson that wasn’t called too. Still, he did nothing to show us that he should be the starting QB… for the first 3 quarters. Then he showed us why we shouldn’t give up on him, just like the Bears didn’t give up in this one. What will this all add up to long term? Who knows, but for one week, Mitch got the job done… whatever it takes to get that W. This is the ultimate stat he should be judged on.

Whew! I knew this Bears season was going to be a roller coaster, but man… talk about sinking all the way to the bottom of my couch to jumping up hitting the ceiling, screaming and yelling… We won’t forget this one; I hope this can shift the Bears out of the neutral they were in for most of this one, into the drive position for our next winnable game against the Giants. Getting that first win was HUGE; time to stack them up. Bear Down!
