September 14, 2017: Blowout

Man that was fun… watching the Cubs dismantle the Mets like that 17-5.  It’s so great to see a blowout…  really?

It’s relaxing, that’s for sure.  Early on, when it was 2-2, it wasn’t so relaxing.  So when Happ and Contreras had their base running blunder, I was pissed.  Even when Strop came in and we were up by 4, and he walked a guy, I was pissed.  Good teams will make us pay for mistakes, like that horrible play on the base paths.  We’ve seen walks kill our bullpen all year.  Thankfully, none of that mattered on this evening.

Albert Almora came off the bench to record 6 RBIs via a 3 run HR and a bases clearing triple; not a bad day at the office… and he didn’t even start.  Yeah, it was all laughs at that point, but then you start to wonder… why don’t the Cubs do this all the time?

Well, no team scores runs like this all the time.  The Cubs scored double digits in a win for the 15th time this season.  We all have that feeling that after a game like this, they flop… and we’re kind of right.  I mentioned this before, but will update it now.  The Cubs are 5-9 following a game in which they win and score in double digits.  What will the series finale against the Mets hold?

A closer look at these double digit outbursts shows that 12 of the 15 times we’ve scored over 10 in a win have been against teams with a losing record currently.  We did it against the Dbacks once, and the Brewers twice.  Is this simply the Cubs beating up on bad teams?  I mean, we scored 3 runs all weekend against the Brewers… 2 in garbage time and 1 off a misplay…

It’s a bit frustrating, that’s for sure.  We know what this offense can do when clicking, but too many times have we seen guys left on base; too many times we’ve been unable to get that big hit.  We don’t need double digits, but timely hitting would go a long way, especially down the stretch.  And if we end this homestretch with a postseason berth, it’s only going to get harder; we’re only going to see the top pitchers.  I worry, but then I think what we did in the last postseason.  We did it against the best, so I know we can do it.

Yes, this is a different team… of course, but most of the band is still together.  I’d like to think that when it comes down to it, we’ll be ready.  It’s time now… 2 in a row, with 17 left to go, and a 2.5 game lead over the Brewers & 3 game lead over the Cardinals.  And although I’d love to see blowouts (that Game 6 of the World Series was the perfect time for one), I enjoy the close, getting pissed, swearing at the TV, edge of your seat games.  Although tough to go through that for 162, I’m ready to go through that for 17 + 5 + 7 + 7 = 36 games.

And as the Indians won their 21st in a row, I’d like to think the Cubs are just starting their 19 in a row to end the season.  2 down, 17 to go.  Go Cubs!!!
