September 14, 2020: No No No

We had this book I used to read my son when he was a baby. It showed pictures of a baby doing bad stuff, and the words “no no no”. It then showed the baby doing something good, and the words “yes, yes, yes”. He got a kick out of that one. I was saying no, no, no for most of Sunday watching the Bears; then it turned to yes, yes, yes. Then I turned on the Cubs. I had seen they were killing the Brewers, which made me happy, but I didn’t realize that Alec Mills was taking a no-no into the 7th inning; Sunday must watch TV continues…

9 outs away when I tuned in. I like that kid. I was just talking about how Lester is seemingly the slam dunk choice for 3rd pitcher in a playoff series; the reason I said “seemingly” was because of the presence of this kid. Of course after I wrote that, Lester came out and threw a gem.. that the Cubs wasted of course. Then Alec came out and did this. Mills retired the Brewers in the 7th; 6 outs away.

Alec reminds me a bit of Kyle. Sure, he’s got more juice on the heater, but the way he really pitches… and mixes it up… and locates… He’s not going to overpower you out there; he’s going to make his pitches. And if he does, then Sundays like this can happen. As we headed to the 8th inning, I changed locations and moved upstairs to watch with my wife and son; I was hoping I didn’t jinx it. Mills got through the 8th; 3 outs away.

Could Mills really pull this out? I mean, after just witnessing what happened in the Bears game, could this day really get that much better? If it didn’t, I’d understand; we had already seen something awesome. Maybe adding a no hitter on top of this Bears game was too much for one city on one day. Still, as the Cubs made the last out in the top of the 9th, and they didn’t go to commercial, keeping the camera on Mills warming up between innings, I really hoped for it. Last time was Jake… last two times actually. Then of course Zambrano in this same park, against the Astros! I remember that clearly. Kyle has been close a few times; Yu has got the stuff to do it. But today, it was Alec Mills. 1-2-3!!! The no hitter happened! I jumped up and down with my son. He wanted to put his Cubs jersey over his Bears jersey… whose boy is this! What a fricking day!

Yeah, it’s not so bad being a Chicago sports fan these days. Of course you can’t forget about the Sox, doing their thing… but did you really have to remind me about the earlier no hitter that Giolito threw, like they did it first, when I was celebrating Mills’ moment? Sox fans are attention starved man… Anyways, with Mills completing the no-no, this was the first time EVER, that both the Cubs and Sox threw no hitters in the same year; is this just another sign that the two will meet in the World Series? Who knows, but for this one day, enduring all the rough days we do as die-hard fans, living and dying with our teams, this was one for the books. This was one for the books… maybe 2020 ain’t so bad after all…
