September 15, 2019: Hello Pirates

The Cubs scored 47 runs and hit 14 home runs in 1 series… a 3 game series at Wrigley this weekend?!?!  Hello Pirates!

I appreciate them.  Can we play them every game from here on out the rest of the season?  Well, we do get 3 more games against them in Pittsburgh next week.  Hopefully the result will be the same: a clean sweep!

Still, the Cubs haven’t always beat who they are supposed to beat; need I remind you of the Padres series earlier in the week.  It’s good to take care of business; it’s good to not sweat for a few games… although I was sweating for the first half inning of this series.

Do you remember that?  The Pirates actually were leading 4-0 on Friday.  I was pissed.  The Cubs were throwing the ball around, playing with their heads up their asses.  Lester barely got out of the first inning.  At that very moment, in the car, listening on the radio, I reached a realization:  if the Cubs don’t make the playoffs, they will deserve their fate.  They have nobody to blame but themselves.  Constantly shooting themselves in the foot… finding ways to lose games.  Then the bottom of the first inning came, and the Cubs never looked back.  It was just what the doctor ordered.

It worked out especially well since the Cardinals and Brewers were playing each other.  Who to root for?  That’s easy: never the Cardinals.  Although if the Brewers were up on us, and the Cardinals were in the basement, maybe I would root for them?  That’s just sickening to think about.  The Brewers played well without their fallen All Star, taking 2 of 3, including one in dramatic fashion on Sunday.  I appreciate them too… now go get swept against the Padres at home this week.  Meanwhile, the Cards will face off against the Nationals; another great scheduling quirk for us.  The 2 teams we’re chasing for the division and wild card respectively playing each other.  Nice!  But oh yeah, we got the Reds.

I’d like to think the Cubs will continue to win the games they should, but facing Sonny Gray in one of the games is not ideal.  Thankfully we don’t have to face Castillo.  I don’t know… the Reds have played us tough all year.  And oh yeah, we’re down another one of our leaders.  First Baez, and now Rizzo; the Cubs depth will be put to a true test these next couple weeks.  Could they both be back for the postseason?  Sure.  Hopefully there will be postseason baseball in Chicago; we know it ain’t coming from the South Side.

Not too much more to say about the Pirates besides them being bastards for hitting our guys.  Really?  Trying to get us to stoop down to their level and risk injury or suspension to our guys who are actually playing for something these days?  Clint Hurdle you suck.  I hope we paste your team just as bad in Pittsburgh next week; you deserve it.

And then there was 13… hopefully a lucky 13 games left on the schedule starting on Monday night in Wrigley vs the Reds.  I’m buckled in, how about you?  Go Cubs!!!
