September 19, 2019: Ten Left

posted in: Cubs | 1

OK, I’ve come down off the ledge after last night’s absolute disaster of a game.  I have my tickets ready to go for tonight.  I’m trying to stay positive.  I still think we can do this.  You see, I can’t stop believing…  even if there was the slimmest particle of hope, I would hang on to it.  Don’t think we’re there yet… after all, we’re still in a playoff spot as of right now.

There are ten games left to make it happen.  You know the Cubs schedule: 4 at home vs the dead birds, 3 on the road vs the buccos, and 3 in boring town vs the dead birds.  It doesn’t matter if we’re talking about the division or the wild card, we need wins.  I believe the Cubs have to go 7-3 to get into the playoffs.  They need to win 3 out of 4 this weekend, they need to win 2 out of 3 in Pittsburgh, and they need to win 2 out of 3 in St. Louis.  Doable?  But what about everybody else?

Well, we know 7 of the last 10 Cardinal games.  The other 3 are in Arizona.  If the above held true, and the Cards won 2 out of 3 in Arizona, we would finish tied.  The Diamondbacks are pretty much toast, but hoping they can pull out one.  The Brewers meanwhile have their last game against the Padres, 3 at home vs the Pirates, then 3 in Cincy, and 3 in Colorado.  The Brewers have to cool off right, especially without Yelich?  If they win today, and 2 out of 3 in the other 3 series, they finish 7-3… tied with us and the Cards.  Can you imagine?  Then the Nationals… 3 in Miami should be a sweep.  Then they have 5 vs Philly and 3 vs Cleveland at home… interesting.  The Phillies are currently 3 behind us and the Brewers for the 2nd wild card.  Let’s just say the Nationals go 8-3; they have the #1 wild card spot locked up.

That would leave a 3 way tie atop the NL Central with only 2 playoff spots available.  Somebody would need to help me figure out what happens next.  First two teams play, loser go home.  Winner plays the third team, winner gets division and loser gets wild card?  Who would be those first two teams?

Most years, this would be exciting as hell; it still is a bit.  Yet, the feeling that the Cubs should have done so much better this year keeps seeping in.  The fact that we’re in this position, one we shouldn’t be in, makes me feel like this will not be a happy ending.  But hey, I said I’m trying to keep it positive…

Walking back into my building today, guy said “we need all 4 against St. Louis”.  I said, I hope so.  He said “they can do it”.  You have to love the positive thinking.  Like I said, all those years without a title, all we had was hope… we’re good at it… we know where to turn… we know to cling onto that hope for dear life… that is the life of a Cubs fan.  So, we’re in a familiar position… hopefully with an unfamiliar ending.  As we know, not many happy endings in our lifetime.  Yes, we CAN do it…  let’s go Cubbies… and oh yeah, Thank God for 2016.  Go Cubs!!!
