So I was by my parents’ house the other day, and wanted to look for some of my sports card collection; I was really looking for my Michael Jordan cards. I knew I had a bunch of those. I took it back home and starting going through the collection.
I couldn’t take it for a while. Living in our condo, just had no room; we were constantly circling out stuff, selling it, donating it, trashing it. I got very good at organizing a lot of stuff into small spaces. Don’t have that problem any more with our house; we have plenty of room. Still, I don’t want to stack up the junk either. But my sports cards… that’s not junk. Actually, it’s my brother’s too. I probably was responsible for more of the collection, but for a good number of years, we were going solid together on it. Unfortunately, from an investment perspective, we didn’t grow up in the 60s or 70s; those cards are worth a lot more. Yeah, we starting collecting mid 80s, as the industry boomed, and tons of cards were made. Thus, the stuff isn’t worth that much. However, as I began to go through it, and organize it, I checked eBay along the way; the industry has rebounded a bit, and that’s a good thing.
Of course I see some of the cards posted for 1000s of bucks; nobody is buying them at that price. I look for the cards that have bids on them, and what price range those are going for, and yeah, we do have some money here. It’s not going to pay off a house or anything like that, but it can certainly be used to throw at some debt, take a vacation, etc. What’s the next step here?

If I want to get the most for these cards, they have to grade at a 10, or mint; I’m not sure how many of these are mint. There are some, for sure, but I’m guessing most of them would be middle of the road and higher; we’ll see. Kind of researching which company would be best to do this for me, how much it’s going to cost, and how long it’s going to take; it will cost some money up front and it will take a long time to get them back. That’s OK, no rush.
So I ordered some individual card holders; going to start sorting out the valuable cards, getting them ready for the grading process. I still want to do some more research before pulling the trigger on anything, but it’s pretty exciting, although, there are some cards that I will want to keep for a personal collection. Going through all these cards brings back good memories. Passing some of this down to my son would be cool; maybe they’ll be worth even more in 20 years or so.
We’ll see, but that’s what I’ve been doing in my “free time”… causing me to fall behind here. So here’s one back; couple more to go.
