September 20, 2020: Any Way You Cut It

Yeah, yeah… I hear you. I’m not making any plans for the Super Bowl or anything. I’m not going to start talking about extending Mitch. I’m not going to gloat over being 2-0, but hey… any way you cut it, the Bears are undefeated after 2 weeks of football, and that’s a damn good thing.

What, are we supposed to be upset about being 2-0? Hell no. I don’t care what anybody says. I don’t care if the Lions and Giants both suck. I don’t care if we “should have” lost one or both of these games. I don’t care if we look like one of the best teams in the NFL or not. Bottom line… 2-0 baby. There’s no arguing that.

So I was wrong about the Bears Giants game feeling like that Bears Bills game from years ago. Not sure if you recall, but it was another beautiful day outside, and we pummeled the Bills like 55-10 or something like that. It had that feeling early on. It had that feeling of a complete domination. It didn’t happen. It turned out that I was actually right… about the Bears not covering that 5.5 point spread. I’m glad I didn’t have any money riding on it, or maybe I WOULD be pissed off right about now. Nope, just happy for another Bears win… 1 point, 2 points, 3 points… don’t matter. How many times do I have to say it? A win is a win.

The Giants actually seemed to get a spark from Barkley going down. Then they lost their top WR… who is on my fantasy team by the way… who I did NOT start this week. Yeah, they were rolling without 2 of their top weapons, and they still almost came back to win the game. Why didn’t we score any more points on offense? Why did we let them drive down the field on us? Was it play calling on both sides of the ball? Was it that the guys felt like this one was in the bag, and they just took their foot off the gas? Whatever it was, it shouldn’t have been this close. The Bears and Giants are light years apart on the field; that was not apparent with Sunday’s result. But if you look at the standings…

Again, Mitch didn’t overwhelm us. He had the 4th quarter last week, he had the 1st quarter this week; two out of eight quarters isn’t exactly taking that starting job and running with it. Had an interesting conversation over the weekend, about Mitch. In my opinion, as long as the Bears are winning, he’s safe. The other opinion was looking at the whole body of work from Mitch after 4, 6 games and making a judgement call regardless of record. That is interesting, but do you pull your starting QB if he continues to be average at best and the team is 5-1? My argument remained that there is not one position in sports that is greater linked to the team’s win and loss record than the NFL QB. If the Bears are winning, I’m fine; why fix something that ain’t broken? But I do understand that if this team continues to win in spite of Mitch, and I’m not saying that is what’s been happening so far, but if that DOES happen, then maybe that leash gets shorter? There has to be a loss accompanying his poor performance in my opinion, most likely, multiple losses.

But we don’t have to worry about losses yet… AH!!! Will it hit the fan next week against the 0-2 Falcons? Maybe, maybe not. But as of right now, the Bears are undefeated; life is good. Bear Down!
