September 22, 2019: One Run at a Time

I can’t remember a worse weekend in baseball. In a season full of tough losses, those type of gut punches that can derail a season, the Cubs may have been dealt their knockout blow. The Cards swept the Cubs in a 4 game series at Wrigley that the Cubs needed to have. Now, the division hopes are gone. Now, the wild card hopes are on life support. It feels like it’s over.

I was there for the first of the four one loss games. It felt like we had some mojo going…with Rizzo a surprise starter in the lead off position, hitting a home run to tie the game, the Cubs coming back in the 9th to score three runs to send it to extras. We had made our way to the bleachers, where we watched the comeback. We were also in the frame where Carpenter hit the first pitch he saw from Kimbrel about 15 feet from us. Still, after scoring three the previous inning, surely we could scrape out one to tie it. Nope. First knockdown.

Cubs got up and went up early on Friday. Yet after three more walks in a row in the top of the 6th, the Cards grabbed the lead and held on for a 2-1 victory. Saturday was a shootout which saw the Cubs winning in the 9th. Yet, two more back to back first pitches from Kimbrel were launched into the bleachers turning a one run lead to a one run deficit which turned into a one run loss. You think you should throw something else than a first pitch fastball down the middle? Not once, not twice, but three times in this series Craig? No excuses buddy.

Finally, Sunday…Cubs again held a one run lead. This time Joe kept the starter in; I would have done the same exact thing. Who could he trust at this point out of the bullpen? Yu was rolling. Joe even made another great move bringing in Almora for a defensive replacement in center. Yet he took two steps forward on the line drive to center before retreating only to see the ball bound off his glove. Like I said, the Cubs have truly found every way to lose a ballgame. Cards scored two runs and grabbed another one run victory.

What a painful way to go…one run at a time. Six losses in a row…at Wrigley. Watching the Cards celebrate clinching a playoff spot in the cathedral. I’m at a loss for words.

There’s so much to unpack here. It looks like we’ll have plenty of time this offseason to unpack it. Sure, we’re not mathematically eliminated, but we’re as good as dead. I’m in shock. It hasn’t fully sunk in yet; I don’t want it to. I refuse to believe this season will end without a postseason appearance. I’m going to have to accept it. Just not yet…not yet.
