September 26, 2019: Not Yet

I know, I know… the Cubs have been officially eliminated from postseason play.  Feels kind of weird, like, not really used to this anymore; I probably need to talk to some White Sox fans to figure out this feeling again.  So used to being in the mix for the postseason, being on the outside looking in, is not a good feeling.  I thought I was ready to unpack my feelings from the season, but I don’t think I’m quite there yet…

There is Cubs baseball still going on; that’s if you can call what the Cubs have been doing since last Tuesday baseball.  9 losses and counting…  Although I’m not ready to do my season in review, I haven’t exactly been tuning into the remaining action either.  I’m kind of done with it… it’s been a series of gut punches throughout the year that have pretty much worn me out.  I probably should have seen the knockout blow that was delivered this past week coming…  I should have been better prepared for this outcome.

Still, I refuse to let go…  I wore my Cubs hat to work the other day, with the 2016 trophy on the side.  You know there are some teams that have never won a World Series; here’s looking at you Milwaukee.  There are other teams that have had a great history, and are used to winning, that have not won in 8 years; that streak will continue for St. Louis.  Then there are those teams who have made the playoffs, like the Dodgers, in 7 consecutive years, but do not have 1 World Series to show for it; that may change this year.  Yeah, whether it’s wearing my 2016 World Series champs t-shirt, drinking out of my 2016 World Series champs glass, or donning my 2016 World Series champs hat… which by the way, I have done each of these this week… I take comfort in the fact that we have one in my lifetime; I couldn’t imagine if we had none…

My wife tells me to take the W flag down from in front of our house.  I said no, baseball season is not over yet; the Cubs are still playing.  Well, that will all change this weekend; I think Sunday is the perfect day to switch out the W for our Bears flag.  Thank god for the Bears in a time like this too.  The fact that they are good is really helpful in avoiding falling into a rut from the rough baseball season that was 2019.

I’ve started reading some stuff about the Cubs, but am really trying not to.  I’m sure everybody has their thoughts on the season; I do too.  I want to get them out… just not yet… not yet.
