September 28, 2019: Late Night Therapy

posted in: Cubs | 0

Do a couple wins against the Cardinals make you feel better? Yeah, we’re messing with their postseason entrance. Frankly, I can’t believe the Brewers are still alive for the division. So after beating the Cards the past 2 nights, the NL Central comes down to the final day. Cool, except we’re not in it.

I am happy that the W flag in front of my house flies for a reason right now. The last two days now, that W flies proudly. It’s a good way to end the season, or so they say. It’s a good send off for Joe, which seems like a foregone conclusion. I don’t know…is all this supposed to make me feel better? I don’t. I don’t know about you, but I need some late night therapy.

I don’t know, maybe the fact that the Cubs will be on the outside looking in this postseason still hasn’t sunk in. Maybe I’m still in denial mode, refusing to write a year end summary aka a eulogy for the 2019 Chicago Cubs. I’ve got a lot of thoughts, but you already know this. Ok, let’s start with Joe.

How much do you blame him? Some people haven’t gotten over the managing in the 2016 World Series. Yeah, that’s right, the one we won!!! I questioned him too, but at the end of the day, we won. We wouldn’t have won if it weren’t for the culture created by Joe, that lead to the speech, which resulted in us coming back out after this act of nature, only way the Cubs were winning, and making history. I still get chills. Yeah, how much credit do you give Joe for that?

He’s gone though, I agree. It’s time. It’s kind of like term limits. Maybe if you’re for them, you understand what I’m saying. Maybe if you’ve been in any job for a long time, maybe one in management, you understand the possibility of your voice becoming stale. No doubt Joe is a great guy, but maybe he’s not the guy for the right now. He was THE guy in 2015, 2016. Now, as curse busters, getting older, maybe it’s time for a new message. I love Joe, but I do think it’s over, and you know what, I think I’m ok with it.

Four out of five postseason appearances. The first World Series title in 108 years. If you just looked at those two facts, to get rid of someone who played a huge part in both of those, you must think it’s nuts. Seriously… I know I’m not that old, but I remember 1984, and every year since then. When have we had it so good? Answer= never.

But that’s our life as Cubs fans today. Flipping the script maybe. We’re used to being in the playoffs, and you know what, we like it, we expect it. I wouldn’t trade that for the world. To be on the outside looking in, seals it. If we made the playoffs again, and let’s say lost in the NLCS again, is Joe surviving? You have an even stronger argument to keep him. To miss completely?

Supposedly they were meeting after the game tonight to finalize things. I hope that conversation is full of good memories; I hope they reminisce how they made history. They did, and I’m forever thankful. Maybe I’m shocked, but if not, I want to wish Joe all the best going forward. I hate that it ended this way, but I understand. I hope he goes on to be great; I hope we go on to get that second one. I feel like hugging him. I’ll hug my wife instead. Go Cubs!
