September 28, 2020: What Did I Miss

Anybody see Hamilton? I did. I saw it in person, then a couple times on Disney. My son loves it. We’re always asking Alexa to play the soundtrack, as he sings and dances around the house. I get in on it too; it’s fun. One of our favorites is “What Did I Miss”… when Jefferson makes his first appearance, returning from France after the revolution, meeting Washington, Madison, and of course, Hamilton. I wasn’t exactly in France during the Bears game, but I have to ask the same question… Yes, I didn’t see one snap of the Bears game on Sunday vs the Falcons, and from what I can tell from the texts and the family members that were following the game at our lunch, it was a doozy.

We were just talking about Mitch before the game. He has shown flashes, but remained very inconsistent; how long will this be good enough? Well, as I’ve said before, as long as the team is winning… If the Bears lose a game, then maybe. Well, in this case, all it took was the Bears to be losing a game. Was it the right move to pull Mitch and bring in Nick? Well, now that the Bears came back, again… now that the Bears are still undefeated, 3-0 WTH (!), I would say yes… yes, yes, yes. Whatever it takes for the team to win, yes all day.

So Nick came in and did what he does. I haven’t watched a lot of highlights, but I did see the game winning pass, which was pretty sweet considering he was getting nailed. Sorting through the text messages, I heard the Bears got screwed a bunch of times; I’ll have to review that myself, but it wouldn’t be the first time. Still, this team, as it did in Week 1 vs the Lions, didn’t give up. When all hope appeared lost, this team kept playing, including the D stepping up, getting another big turnover, and won another NFL game. Did I mention 3-0?!!

Where do we go from here? Well, my first instinct is to roll with Nick now, yet, I’m not writing Mitch off either. If it were me, it would have taken a loss, at least one, for me to pull the starter, but as you may have figured out, I’m not the coach. Nagy’s gut was right; he pulled him, giving the team a spark which lead them to victory. I guess I kind of think about hockey, and the goalie being pulled. It may not have been all the goalies fault, but by pulling him, you are sending a message to him and the team; message received in this case. Yet, when a goalie is pulled, it doesn’t mean the end; they will most likely start the next game. I think this is where it will be different.

I think Foles should start the next game. I think Nagy should continue to go with his gut. If the same scenario presents itself, this time with Foles as the starter and Trubisky as the backup, maybe the same decision should be made… maybe the same result will ensue. OK, Nagy ain’t that good… nobody is, but… what is wrong with going with the hot hand? Neither of these guys are that bulletproof, are at that level, where they should feel like they can never be pulled. Will this negatively play into their or the team’s psyche? That’s why they get paid the big bucks; buck up boys. That’s why Nagy gets paid the big bucks…

At the end of the day, it all added up to another Bears win; let the haters hate. 3-0 is 3-0 is 3-0. The fact that the Bears haven’t played their best, haven’t put together a complete effort on both sides of the ball for 4 quarters, and are STILL 3-0… I’m feeling pretty good about that. What did I miss? I missed seeing an undefeated football team win another game. Bear Down baby!!!
