Where have we seen this before? Well, being the Marlins and being the postseason, the last time we saw this matchup was 17 years ago; we don’t need a reminder of how that ended. Yet, on this final day of September 2020, what we saw transpire in front of our eyes, sure reminded this guy of that other series. Once that first home run left the park, and the Marlins took a 3-1 lead, I knew they weren’t done. Actually, and unfortunately, I called the Aguilar home run; I figured the inning would end with the Marlins up 8-1… I was wrong with that one; it was only 5-1. Game over.
Why did I think game over right away? Why didn’t I keep the faith? It’s NOT because of what happened 17 years ago; it’s because of what we’ve watched all year with this Cubs team. It’s the same old story… Cubs offense sucks for one. For two, once the Cubs fall behind by more than 1 run, most times it’s over. They have came back from it… 4 times during this short season, and actually 3 of those times in the final 3 weeks of the season. Yet, you just kind of knew it was over… there was no spark, other than the lead off double in the 9th by Willson, there was nothing. There was no sign that the Cubs offense would do anything. Regardless of the last series of the year, where they appeared to wake up, the Cubs offense returned to what we’ve seen most of the year; they didn’t do a damn thing. Yet, I’ll dig deep. I’ll wear my Cubs gear. I’ll keep the faith alive. I just can’t deny what my eyes have seen this entire, shortened season. I can’t forget the last time we saw these guys, no matter how little relevance that has right now. My head is telling me no, no, no…. my heart is holding on, hoping to see Yu save our season, hoping to see the bats come alive… Must win game next. Go Cubs!
