September 7, 2020: Must Play Well

Whew; that was a big win for the Cubs on Sunday afternoon against the Cardinals. It was the difference between a half game lead and a two and a half game lead. I hate throwing the term around “must win”… so I won’t, but… this was a “must play well” game for the Cubs, and they did.

The Cubs must play well from here on out; well, they need to play good enough to make the playoffs. In this 60 game season, what is the record the Cubs must turn in to capture that division title? At 24-18, they only have 18 games remaining. If they went 500 from here on out, that would leave us at 33-27 for the year; is that good enough? That certainly would be better than the recent stretch of 11-15 over their past 26. If we’re going with 500 is good enough to win, and we assume Yu and Kyle win their games from here on out, which would be about 7 games, that leaves 2 games to win from the other starters. Maybe I’m putting too much thought into this…

Games against the Reds (3), Brewers (3), Indians(2), Twins(3), Pirates(4), and Sox (3) remain. If we take 3 of 4 from the Pirates, that means we only have to win 1 other series this year, and 1 game in every other one, to achieve that 9-9 finish, and 33-27 record. That seems doable right? IF, and that’s a big IF, that record will do the job. I guess I’m not putting enough thought into this. How many other ways can we split this up?

If we’re looking at worst case scenario, and if you really think about it, the wheels would really have to fall off for the Cubs NOT to make the playoffs this year. It would seem fitting that the Cubs and Dodgers would meet again in the NLCS; that would be fun. I would be extremely happy to get back to that round, and if our starting pitching can pitch like they did the first month, and if our core guys can start hitting… THAT would be fun.

I just feel like everything is happening quickly with this 60 game season. I mean, we’re just settling into the year and it’s almost over, and now we have to think about all this crap. Heck, shouldn’t the magic number be coming out soon? It’s all good. If we strip it all away, and get to the bare bones, just the fact that we have baseball after not having live sports for months is not forgotten. Yet, now that we’re here, and rolling, there is only one thing that must happen for this season not to be a disappointment, and that’s winning it all again.
